Wallpaper design has captivated Western consumers for 300 years, but this book looks closer - at wallpaper use. It tells how single-sheet wallpaper developed in Europe, found wide acceptance in England and France, and was successfully transplanted to the North American colonies. By 1750, wallpaper was well-established and poised for phenomenal growth.

For the first time, all aspects of the early history of wallpaper have been brought together in one book. Robert Kelly specialises in historic wallpaper installations so writes with great authority . He provides many quotations from original documents & descriptions as he brings to life the early history of wallpaper . Manufacturing methods, paperhanging & installation techniques, paper sellers & the export markets are discussed and there are also chapters on Chinese Scenic Papers, Screens, Papier – Mache ornamentation & leather hangings. The Bibliography alone is an invaluable resource for scholars.I have no doubt that this book will quickly become a standard reference book for everyone interested in the conservation & recreation of historic wallpapers.
