About the Author

Dr. Sara Pizano is a veterinarian and Animal Welfare Strategist who has devoted her career to shelters. She is a 1994 graduate of the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine and a 1995 graduate of the Animal Medical Center internship program in New York. Dr. Pizano has served as staff shelter veterinarian performing high volume spay/neuter in private shelters and 6 years as a public shelter at Miami-Dade Animal Services in Florida.

Since 2013, Dr. Pizano has completed more than 100 community and shelter assessments in 22 states, focusing on shelters euthanizing for space and those struggling with capacity for care. Her work has culminated in an approach to help shelters of all sizes, both public and private, realize their full potential and in an analysis of just 18 shelters, the number of pets euthanized for space decreased by more than 47,000 dogs and cats the first year.

Dr. Pizano’s approach to implementing Best Practice strategies keys in on foundational issues with public policy, community programs meant to keep pets in their homes and processes to move animals into the best placement quickly.

As a courtesy faculty member at the University of Florida, Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program, Dr. Pizano oversees the assessment and mentorship program, is part of the Million Cat Challenge team and founder of Team Shelter USA, a national consulting company. She has served on a variety of national, state and local committees and boards.

The Best Practice Playbook for Animal Shelters was written for all audiences who want to see pets helped in ways other than through a shelter intake and who want sustainable resolution for problems long thought unsolvable.
