About the Author

Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) was a popular 19th-century French writer and is considered to be one of the fathers of the modern short story. He was a protégé of Gustave Flaubert and knew Émile Zola and the Russian novelist Ivan Turgenev. Later short story writers who have cited Maupassant as an influence include Somerset Maugham and O.Henry.
