Introduction

This report provides an overview of the printing industry in France, Italy, Germany, Netherlands and UK. The narrative and analysis covers trends in the printing industry and provides forecasts in these countries that impact the future. We also review some of the key issues facing the industry today which influence the future performance of companies within the industry.

The industry has changed rapidly over the last decade. This has been a response to new technologies, competition on a global scale, which has led to other media and demands from customers for lower costs, higher quality and more swift response. A key technical transition has been from analogue data processes towards 'digital workflows' in which content is received and processed in electronic form. The result from this action is extensive investment in information technology hardware and software and a growing need for people with IT skills within the industry.

The future is about technical and other changes that impact the industry, which needs transfer from craft skills to IT skilled personnel. This means the changing balance between physical craft skills into computer-based process control and graphic skills are the future needs to challenge the global competition.

The past process of personnel recruitment has been from people leaving school at the minimum age, but the requirement now is higher average skills for new recruits. The number of new entrants has been very low due to pressure for more people to enter university and not to be attracted to a manufacturer sector, which has the repetition over time of low wages and no future.

Some of the European-based vendors such as Heidelberg and MAN Roland in Germany have developed printing universities and apprentice schemes in order to attract and train new staff to the printing industry. In addition several countries including the UK have developed graduate courses with the ability to gain advanced qualifications in the graphic arts and commercial printing disciplines.

Printing is generally recognised as a mature industry, which continues to undergo major and rapid changes, due to technology and the educated customer. The demand is for customer-focused companies to supply the needs of the 21st century with quality service, quality products, quality personnel and quality business models to meet the needs of the global trading environment. Demographic trends will create higher volumes of printing as the overall market continues to expand with fewer print companies, due to mergers/acquisitions and those print companies that do not meet customer oriented requirements. Plus, the trend for the growth of the Print Management companies to meet the needs of the customer's requirements to manage the supply of printed and non-printed services.

The environmental regulations will also play a part in reducing print volumes of magazines and direct mail, which will have a knock-on impact on packaging. There are considerable opportunities for innovation in both printing and printed packaging to the ambitious organisations that are customer focused and environmentally friendly. Other trends include printed output from digital equipment, automation of production processes, development of Web-based operations, and more sophisticated digital workflow management systems. All these operations will encompass a global connection of competition, customers, suppliers, print companies and mergers of unions.
