The story is told in the first person. the author conducts an experiment on his acquaintance Mr. Waldemar, who is dying of tuberculosis. The author places him in a "mesmeric state" in order to explore the peculiarities of the dying process in this state. The author then describes the consequences of his experience. The story, written in the genres of suspense and horror, was first published without an explanation that it was a work of fiction, and was taken by many as documentary evidence of a real-life experience of magnetism.
