Poppy and Gabriel are deeply in love and have a completely happy marriage except for one thing. After three years of marriage, it seems they cannot have children. Poppy wants a child. Gabriel doesn’t want to deny her that wish and he would like to be a father. His mother and sister, as well as Poppy’s mother died giving birth, and he is terrified of losing Poppy in childbirth. Working at Hartwell house, they meet a young woman who, sadly, does not wish to keep her baby when it is born. Gabriel offers to take the child for him and Poppy to raise. It doesn’t work out. Poppy is happy that the girl decides to keep her baby. About this same time, Poppy has a surprise for Gabriel. When she happily tells him that she is going to have a baby, the old fear grabs him. He cannot hide his feelings. What will happen now? How will this affect his relationship with Poppy? Wonderful characters that you can’t help but love and pull for, and a sweet heartwarming story make this one not to be missed.

The Gift of the Marquess by Darcy Burke and is the second book in the Love is All Around series! It is a great Christmas historical romance to get you in the mood for the holiday season that you definitely don't want to miss. Poppy and Gabriel want a family, but after three years of marriage they have given up of all hope. They fill their time working at a local home for unwed mothers and children, but it just isn't the same. Poppy would do anything to have their own children and Gabriel would do anything to prevent it since losing his mother and sister during childbirth. This difference has caused them to be at odds with each other during what should be the most wonderful time of the year. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book in this series! I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

The Gift of the Marquess is the second book in the new series Love is All Around. The series is based on the Duke of Harwell (Calder) and his two sisters Lady Bianca and Poppy, the Marchioness of Darlington. The first book was Lady Bianca’s story and this book is Poppy’s. They can be read as standalone, but they are better if read in series. They take place around the Christmas holiday and some parts of the books overlap in time. This story is unique in that Poppy is already married to Gabriel, the Marquess of Darlington. They have been married for three years and have had no children. Poppy is devastated, but Gabriel is secretly glad because he fears losing Poppy in childbirth, like his mother and Poppy’ mother. When Poppy learns of Gabriel’s feeling she feels betrayed and sad. She decides to go back to helping at the Hartwell House, an orphan’s home, only to learn that Gabriel has brought a young pregnant girl, Dinah, to stay in a cottage on their estate. After confronting him and learning the Dinah’s situation, she dedicates her time to Dinah and trying to convince her to keep her child. Poppy and Gabriel are in a dilemma, they would love to raise Dinah’s child as their own but know that Dinah would regret giving up her child later in life. I loved the characters and could feel their pain of wanting a child. This book touches the heart of those who have suffered the same but also gives us hope. I can’t wait to read Calder’s story and learn what had happened in his past to cause his bitterness. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the second book in the Love All Around series. I did not enjoy this book as much as the first. I felt that it was focused solely on Poppy and Gabe’s infertility. I would have rather had some mystery or crime they solve as the main focus of the story and their fertility issues as a side issue in the story. I am looking forward to reading Calder’s story. I received an ARC for my honest review.

Poppy has been volunteering at a poorhouse and helping to take care of the women and child. It has kept her mind away from the fact that she hasn't been able to give her husband a child of their own. But lately it has made her to sad to be around all the mothers and their children. She finally has a talk with her husband and she realizes that they are not on the same page when it comes to having children. Gabriel loves his wife more than anything. If he lost her, he doesn't know what he would do. He has lost too many female family members to childbirth sickness, so when Poppy doesn't get pregnant, he is relieved that he won't lose her that way. But when a misunderstanding brings light to how both of them feel, it causes a strain on their marriage. Can these two reconcile before the holiday season or will it just push them further apart? I really enjoyed Poppy and Gabriel's story. It was different from most romances in that the couple is already married and very much in love, but they've reached a rough patch in their marriage. It was wonderful watching these to find their happiness again. Too often in romances, we only see the HEA and not what comes afterward. Bravo to Burke for showing up what might come after the HEA!

Wow. There’s quite a lot going on here. And for anyone who has struggled with fertility issues, this story could be considered slightly triggering. Poppy and Gabriel are fantastic characters. Having been married for several years now, they’ve already made it past most of the worst miscommunication problems that often plague the newly wedded. That doesn’t mean their journey is all smooth sailing though; they still have their moments of ‘humans behaving badly’ where they don’t talk the issues through. No matter what else is going on, it’s easy to feel the love these two have for one another. I thought their emotional vulnerability came across as very realistic and I loved that both characters had growth they needed to accomplish. I felt that their issues resolved a bit too easily, but I realize that it happens that way in real life on a fairly regular basis. I’m dying to see what happens in the next book now. I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley.

-A tender story of some of the things that can affect couples especially long ago. Poppy and Gabriel have to face and work through their trials and learn how to cope with them.

This is an emotional short story set at Christmas time about dealing with being childless. It is a touching story of both wife and husband accepting their future and healing through grief. It was inspired by the story, The Gift of the Magi. Gabriel the Marquess of Darlington is madly in love with his wife Poppy. They've been married 3 years and still have no children. Poppy has been depressed about that and thrown herself into helping her sister with the Hartwell house charity that supports abandoned mothers and small children. Gabriel shares her dedication to the charity of helping others and makes repairs to the aging house. During the story Poppy finally faces the fact she'll probably never have children and opens her eyes to fostering thanks to Gabriel's suggestion. Gabriel on the other fears childbirth as he lost his mother and sister in childbirth. He's sure Poppy will die birthing their child. Later in the the story Gabriel himself comes to view life is uncertain and that he needs to take joy in the life he has now with his love and valued friends. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a truly heartwarming and emotional story from beginning to end! It’s a unique story because they are already married and in love, but going through such a rough time that tests them. I loved that this is going on at the same time as the first book so you know what was going on with Poppy at the house party. It’s heartbreaking to see them both struggle in different ways and be torn apart. The scene where Gabriel remembered everything that happened with his mother and everything after was so raw with emotion. I absolutely loved the moment they made up because their love was so strong and it was such a powerful moment for many reasons. Poppy wants to be a mother so badly, but after three years she’s trying to come to terms with it won’t happen the way she dreamed. She so desperately wants a baby, but can’t help but try to help Dinah in any way possible. I loved her fire from the start and when she laid into her brother. Gabriel thought he found a way to give Poppy her dream and banish his fears, but it only brought them up in full force. He will break your heart as he talks about his fear. I loved how much he cared about helping others and when he realized he couldn’t let fear control him. The ending was absolutely perfect and I can’t wait to read her brother’s story and find out what happened to him. Copy provided for an honest and voluntary review

County Durham, England - 1811 Gabriel Kirkwood, the Marquess of Darlington, is doing some repairs to Hartwell House, also known as the Institution for Impoverished Women. Mrs. Armstrong oversees the Institution. Both Gabriel and his wife, Poppy, the marchioness, have done a lot to help them. After three years of marriage, Gabriel and Poppy have yet to have a baby. When Dinah Kinston, an unwell and heavily pregnant woman comes to the Institution for help, she finds that all of the beds there are filled. So, Gabriel offers her the cottage on theirs estate and one of the workers volunteers to go with her to help care for her. Dinah says she does not want to keep her baby but they encourage her saying that surely when she sees her baby, she will fall in love with it. Poppy wants a baby so much but Gabriel is afraid he might lose her in childbirth as have many others of their relatives. Poppy’s older brother, Calder, the Duke of Hartwell, has become very tight-fisted since taking over the dukedom. When she confronts him about it, he coldly refuses to help. This infuriates Poppy because her father had always helped to support the Institution and it needs money desperately. Will Poppy find happiness in her life helping other young children but never experiencing the joy of motherhood? This is yet another story that shows us we cannot give into fear but trust that things in life will go well. I’m sure readers will enjoy it. "A dream rooted in his mind...A dream he dared not hope for, and yet couldn't keep from wanting." That was Gabriel's thought as he realized the fact that the woman did not want her baby.... Gabriel had been helping out at Hartwell House that took in woman and children when they had nowhere else to go. His wife Poppy came whenever she could but realized she had not been herself lately. A truly lovely story about a couple so in love everything seemed perfect except Poppy desperately wanted a child and after three years there had not been one. Gabriel was releaved because he was scared of losing her to childbirth. But a thought had come into his head when he saw the new girl who was pregnant and did not want her child. Strong emotions, fears, doubts and love all feel this wonderful story that Darcy Burke has written to perfection. Emotions that so many women have felt through time when faced with trying to conceive and it feeling hopeless. A true joy filled my heart toward the end and I cannot wait to read the next in this series... Lori D

I received an advanced reader’s copy of The Gift of the Marquess. Poppy, the Marchioness of Darlington has been wanting to become a mother. Gabriel, the Marquess of Darlington is happy with the ways things are as Poppy not conceiving means he won’t have to face the possibility of her dying during childbirth. One of the things I enjoyed about this book is the interaction between Poppy and Gabriel. They are a loving couple and respectful of each other even when angry. They express their feelings and try to be supportive of each other. They are also generous and care for the needy. The timeline of this story overlaps the first in the series and I really liked how it provided a different perspective of some scenes that happened in the first book of this series. Although there is overlap, it touches on the scenes briefly and you don’t feel like you’re reading the same scene again. This is a heartwarming book with a satisfying ending. I’m looking forward to the last book in the series.

The Gift of the Marquess by Darcy Burke Love is All Around #2 Three siblings will have their story told in this trilogy. First came Bianca and Ash and last will be Calder and Felicity but book two is the story of Poppy and Gabriel and what a story it is. This couple is already married, loves deeply and after three years of marriage is still childless. Poppy is grim and sad and devastated that she may never have children while her husband, who has lost more than one due to childbirth, is secretly happy his wife has not gotten pregnant because he fears he might lose her, too. The couple is interesting. They are both giving charitable people who do what they can for the village. They do go through a bit of a rough patch due to the baby situation but manage to work through their issues to end up very happy at the end. Both Bianca and Poppy are rather upset with their brother and how much he has changed in the past ten years and I do believe we will find why he changed in book three and perhaps he, too, will be able to return to the man he used to be and find his happily ever after, too. This is definitely a holiday trilogy as it takes place around Christmas and there will be a finale Christmas party in the final book. Did I enjoy this story? Yes Will I read more by this author? Without a doubt 4-5 Stars

The Gift of the Marquess is Ms Burke's first foray into writing an already-married couple, and is loosely based on The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry. Like the other books in this series, it's a holiday novella and a pleasant way to pass an afternoon as the weather starts to change. I liked Poppy and Gabriel's story; their conflict was as heartbreaking as it was realistic. It was clear that they loved each other, but equally clear that neither was quite sure how to bridge their differences. They both got a little bit of help with that (Poppy from her sister Bianca of The Red Hot Earl and Gabriel from an unexpected source) and manage to work their way to an extremely sweet HEA at the end. I wasn't totally comfortable with the original solutions that they came up with for "fixing" their problems (involving one of the women from the charity home they support), though it helped that they weren't always 100% comfortable with it either. Ultimately I was pleased with the way their situation resolved itself, though I had hoped they'd eventually go with their other option (view spoiler). Maybe they still will in the future? The Gift of the Marquess is the second book in Ms Burke's Love is all Around trilogy. Some of the events occur concurrently with that book, but this one could still be read as a standalone. Rating: 4 stars / B+ I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. The Gift of the Marquess by Darcy Burke is the second book in her regency Christmas trilogy of novellas Love is All Around. Poppy Kirkwood, Marchioness of Darlington is devastated by her failure to conceive a child after 3 years of marriage. Her husband Gabriel Kirkwood is secretly relieved as he is terrified of losing Poppy in childbirth because he has already lost both his mother and sister that way. When just before Christmas a pregnant young woman turns up at the home for single women and their children that they support it seems if perhaps they can find a way to have a family. Short and sweet and full of the joys of the season this novella is a perfect read for the Christmas season. In The Gift of the Marquess, her second novella in Love is All Around series, Darcy Burke brings an emotional, heart-touching tale to life, loosely based on the Gift of the Magi. Two characters introduced in the first in series, The Red Hot Earl, is a three years married couple, Poppy, the Marchioness of Darlington and her husband Gabriel, the Marquess. Poppy, the older sister of Bee, the heroine in The Red Hot Earl, has given up hope of ever having a child of her own, and not for lack of trying. She and her husband Gabriel are deeply in love with one another and Darcy Burke tastefully incorporates some very steamy scenes about their encounters with one another. All of them flow well into what is going on in the overall relationship between the couple and their inability to truly share their fears with one another. Some interesting dynamics take place with other characters in this novella, some of whom were met in the previous novella and others new. It is an emotional journey that Poppy and Gabriel face before they learn to become honest and open with one another. I greatly enjoyed their story and I’m looking forward to the next in series. My thanks for the opportunity I was granted to review an ARC copy of this work. All opinions stated are my own and voluntary.

Love takes a bite out of your heart in The Gift of the Marquess. Heartache becomes a big deal for a couple yearning for different outcomes to the same problem. Poppy and Gabriel have to decide if love is worth facing down the scenarios neither can control. Burke tackles more than just a love story. Beyond the heartbreak and the disappointment lies an inspiring tale of hope. That's a subject every heart can relate to.
