CHAPTER 1
Unexpected Friends
The day started like any other day. The alarm goes off and you pretend you don't hear it until it annoys you so much that you finally shut it off and try to go back to sleep. Only now your mother starts calling for you to come to breakfast and to hurry up so you won't be late for school. William a fine young athletic teenager finally gets up, showers and brushes his teeth and then goes down stairs to eat his breakfast. William's younger sister Angela was already at the table eating her breakfast when William sits down. William's mother asked him why he was so tired this morning and pointed out that his sister beat him to the table. William's mother inferring that girls have more primping to do than boys and he took longer than was expected to get ready for school. William told her that he didn't sleep very well because of the bad weather throughout the night. The wind seemed to be howling a lot louder and the rain seemed heavier than normal.
William's mother nodded in agreement and said, "The wind was so bad that it broke a branch off the tree in the front yard and tore shingles off the roof and scattered them all over the place."
William's Mother continued, "The first thing I have to do today is to look into getting a new roof."
Dad chimed in at that point and said, "That is a new roof. It was installed only five years ago and that roof should not be falling apart already. The roof is supposed to be good for twenty years!"
William's mother tried to calm his father down from adding up the dollars in his head to fix the roof by telling him that the roof is under warranty and not to worry.
Somehow that didn't comfort William's father too much because he started to grumble and complain that some how the roofing company would find a way to get out of the warranty by claiming it was an act of God. William's mother quickly changed the subject and reminded his sister and I to get going to school because she didn't want us to be late.
William and his sister grabbed their backpacks and said their goodbye's and headed for the front door. When William opened the door he was taken back at how much damage and debris there was everywhere.
William, shocked by what he saw, exclaimed, "Wow, that was some storm last night, Angela. This place looks like a tornado hit it."
Angela's face looked pale all of a sudden as she realized this storm was more than just a storm. She looked at William, and pointed to the clouds in the sky and said, "William even the clouds in the sky look angry. Something is wrong, very wrong."
"Yeah, well now you know why I had a hard time sleeping," William told her.
Angela said, "William, let's hurry up and get to school." They both looked at each other and walked a little faster to school.
When William and Angela got to school they saw more of the same storm damage, tree branches down, broken windows, a flooded parking lot and a whole bunch of chaos. There was talk that school would be closed for the day due to the storm because it had knocked out the school's power and if the power wasn't restored before school started all of the students would have to go home. William kept thinking there is no such luck to get out of school. His principal was so committed to education that he was convinced that as soon as the power was out he was on the phone with the power company getting them to make restoring power to the school a priority.
William was right. The power went back on ten minutes before school started and all the students were directed to go to their classes and heard the Principal make a funny remark as the students entered the building.
He said, "Sorry to disappoint you all but the power is restored and class can begin."
There was a murmur of complaints amongst the crowd of students as they started to walk to the door. William waved goodbye to his little sister as she walked across the street to her middle school. This day for some reason had an odd feeling about it and William was sure that he would never forget it.
William arrived to his homeroom and took his seat. The students were still complaining about having to go to school and what they would have done if they had the day off. While Mrs. Velasco took roll call and made the announcement that all sports practices for the day would be cancelled due to the storm, all the jocks in the room complained even louder. William thought no practice, no problem. It's not like missing one practice was going to hurt the team. William had a term paper to finish on global warming and it was due tomorrow. He thought at least he would not have to be up late writing his paper.
The bell rang and William was off to science class. Mr. Pennington's class was by far the best class he had. William never knew what to expect in Mr. Pennington's class as it was always changing. One thing for sure was that Mr. Pennington taught his students to always be prepared because if you weren't, then you couldn't participate and he would send you off to the library to read up on the current event. Mr. Pennington was a very energetic fellow and he liked to engage the class in a conversational debate about everything and anything. He loved to get the wheels turning inside their head's and to get his students thinking outside of the box. The class started with Mr. Pennington asking the students what they thought of the storm. The students were giving typical answers that the storm caused a lot of damage and it was really windy.
Mr. Pennington responded by saying, "And."
The students soon realized what he was looking for a more in depth answer with information other than the obvious.
The room was silent for a moment until a girl from the back of the class said, "Are you referring to the sudden spike in the Earth's temperature that caused this unusual storm?"
"Yes, Aleah, very good someone did her homework. Can you tell me what might have caused the storm?" asked Mr. Pennington.
"Well, one cause could be the burning of fossil fuels which is causing greenhouse gases in our atmosphere and unfortunately changing our climate, therefore making our world unstable," Aleah responded.
Some of the other students in the class started teasing Aleah and saying things like,
"Einstein does it again,"
"Smart chick," and asking mean questions like,
"Don't you have a life?"
"Is that all you do is read the weather?"
William couldn't stand it anymore and he told his classmates some of which were on the football team with him to, "Knock it off already. Being smart is not a crime and she has saved our sorry butts many times by having the right answer when the teacher threatens to give us an extra reading assignment if no one can answer his questions during class."
William could see the look of gratitude on Aleah's face. William smiled at her and then turned around in his seat to see the teacher. Mr. Pennington announced that no other outbursts would be tolerated and if anyone would like to speak to please raise their hand.
"Now shall we continue?" Mr. Pennington said.
Just then the bell rang and the students were excused. William's friends hassled him a little bit going out the door but he didn't care because he felt good for helping Aleah.
The rest of the day went by quickly and William was glad it was over. Hopefully his friends would forget about today and it would be back to normal tomorrow. He was glad football practice was cancelled so that he wouldn't have to listen to his friends rib him about Aleah. William thought since he didn't have practice he would surprise his little sister and walk home with her from school. As William was walking down the steps that lead to the doorway Aleah caught up with him and said,
"Hey that was real nice what you did for me in class today."
"Sure, no problem," William answered.
Aleah asked, "Why did you do it? I mean, I am not ungrateful or anything. I'm just curious is all. You risked a lot by standing up for me. Who knows how long they're going to torture you over this?"
"Torture!" William said. "Don't you think you're going a little too far?"
Aleah answered, "Well, we will see. Anyway thanks for what you did today. I'll see you later."
William asked, "Wait, where are you going? Is there a place you have to be just now?"
Aleah said, "No, I just don't want to cause you any more trouble. I mean being seen with me."
William said, "Why don't you let me worry about that, cause I'm not worried. Would you like to go and get something to drink?"
Aleah answered, "That would be great."
William and Aleah walked across the school grounds and waited in the park for his little sister. William looked at Aleah,
"Hey do mind if we wait right here for my little sister? She's not expecting me today to be here waiting for her because I was supposed to have football practice today.
"Not at all," Aleah answered. "So tell me about football," Aleah continued.
"What do you want to know?" William asked.
"Well," said Aleah, "Tell me what you like about football besides the cheerleaders and all that male bonding stuff."
William said, "Aleah football is much more than that. It's about sportsmanship, teamwork, timing and skill."
Aleah replied, "Skill?"
William said, "Yeah skill, let me show you. Go stand on the field about 30 yards out and I will throw the ball to you."
"Okay," Aleah said.
Aleah ran out on the field turned around and said,
"Okay, I'm ready."
William replies, "Okay, now catch the ball."
William threw the ball and Aleah caught the ball.
Aleah said, "I caught the ball and your point was?"
William said, "Just wait, I am going to throw the ball to you while we are both running, but I want you to move around like someone is blocking you and I will throw it to you."
"Alright," Aleah replied.
She was zigging and zagging all over the field but some of her zags were longer than her zigs. William watched her for a little bit saw the anticipated moment and threw the ball right to her and she missed it.
"Lucky pass," was Aleah's reply.
William said, "No it wasn't. Throwing the ball at the right moment at a moving target is skill. How about you try and throw the ball to me?"
Aleah took the challenge with this determined look on her face. She took the field, picked up the ball and got into position and started to run as did William. William ran to the right and then he quickly spun his body to the left and started to run again. He put one arm up to show that he was open. Aleah took the pass and missed William by a good three feet.
William said, "It's not so easy is it?"
Aleah had a look of pure disappointment a feeling that William was sure she was not familiar with. He teased her a little and told her that it's okay, we all can't be good at everything. She shouted back to William that she wanted a do over.
William said, "Disappointment for you twice in one day may be too much for you and I don't know if you can handle it."
Aleah shouted, "Just throw the ball."
William got ready to throw the ball again and just as he was about to throw the ball his little sister tackled him from behind and the ball went flying from his hand and landed a few feet away and his sister yelled,
"Let's hear it for the girls!"
William grabbed his little sister and tackled her to the ground and started to tickle her.
Aleah walked over and said, "Hi, you must be William's little sister."
Angela replied, "More like younger sister. Hi I'm Angela, I hope my brother isn't boring you with all his football stories."
William said, "Thanks a lot Angela. This is Aleah. She is in my science class."
Angela replied, "Hi, you know my brother needs a lot of help in science class."
William was so dissed by his little sister that she knew she was going to get it. William started to run after her and when he did he picked her up and started to swing her around like an airplane.
Angela was laughing hysterically and kept saying, "higher, higher!"
While they were playing in the park unbeknownst to them, hiding among the tall grass and trees that grew at the edge of the park were the cutest little people wearing floppy soft red hats conversing with a swarm of bees as they were peering through the grass watching them. At the edge of the park was the beginning of the forest with hiking trails. One of the little people gave the order for the bees to go and chase the three children into the woods so they could talk to them.
The little man in charge said, "Okay, they're in the right place, go and get them."
As William was swinging his little sister he didn't notice the bee that had flown down in his face and with one swift move he let go of his sister and batted the bee away. Angela fell to the ground and when she looked up she saw a swarm of black dots coming for them and she asked,
"Will, what is that bunch of black dots headed right for us?"
William shouted, "Run, it's a bunch of angry bees. Head for the woods we'll get some cover there."
The children all ran as fast as their legs could carry them. The thought of being stung over and over again by a bunch of angry bees gave them a rush of adrenaline that gave them the super speed that they needed to get to the forest. As soon as they reached the forest the foliage was thick and dense and would give them cover from the bees. They saw a big rock that was large enough that they could all hide behind to catch their breath. The children listened for the hum of the bees over their heads and were expecting them to pounce at any moment. What they got instead was complete silence. At that moment the children were wondering where did the bees go and if it was safe to get up and continue walking.
No sooner did the children recover from being skewered by a bunch of angry bees when they got the shock of their life. What they saw they thought only existed in fairy tales. The children all had this feeling that they weren't in Kansas anymore and their faces reflected that sentiment because a little man popped out from behind the tree and said,
"Yep, you're right. They have that look when a deer gets caught starring at headlights. It's like their brain shuts off and they can't function."
William said to the little man, "Who are you? And are you talking to us?"
The little man asked, "Are you sure we got the right ones? This one seems a few straws short upstairs if you know what I mean. And the other two haven't come out of it yet."
Just then another little man popped out into clear view and said to the other little man, "Yes, I'm sure these are the children that my Lady has been requesting."
Aleah finally found the words to speak and asked, "Excuse me, but who are you? And who is requesting us? And, what is going on?"
The first little man said, "Now that's more like it. This one has spunk." Hello, I am Eagleton because I am swift like an eagle and this is my friend Boureguard he get's his name because he is a guardian, but we just call him Bou."
William spoke up and said, "Hello Eagleton and Bou, I am William. This is Aleah and my little sister Angela."
The little men seamed very pleased when William spoke their names.
William asked, "Are you the little people we've heard about in stories?"
Eagleton replied, "Yes, only we are not called little people we are..."
"Gnome's," Aleah answered. "Gnome's take care of the Earth for us."
Eagleton said, "Yes. My Lady said you are the bright one."
Angela piped up and said, "My Lady, you keep referring to my Lady, who is she?"
Boureguard spoke with a soft voice and explained, "My Lady is the Great Mother of the Earth that knows all, sees all, and cares for all who live on the Earth."
"You mean Mother Earth," William said.
"Yes William," Bou replied. "Mother Earth has requested your presence for it is time."
"It is time? Time for what?" asked Angela.
Eagleton stepped up next to Bou and all of the Gnomes including the bees came out of hiding and bowed before the three of them.
Eagleton said, "It is with great love and honor that we are here to escort you to Mother Earth for she will tell you all that you need to know."
William seemed very surprised to see the bees and asked, "The bees, are they with you?"
