THE HISTORY OF STANDARD OIL is an influential early history of John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company. Considered to be a muckraking exposé, the history was originally serialized in McClure's Magazine in 1904. Tarbell worked to expose the abuses and unethical practices which Rockefeller used to bully other companies out of business, and is credited with contributing to the breakup of the company in 1911 and inspiring similar muckraking efforts. About the Author

Ida M. Tarbell (1857-1944) was a leading American journalist and muckraker. Born in Pennsylvania, Tarbell grew up with the oil industry, and became acquainted with the unfair tactics often employed by Rockefeller's Standard Oil. The tactics Tarbell later detailed in her muckraking exposé had put her father's small oil company out of business. Tarbell's work proved instrumental in the court-ordered break-up of Standard Oil in 1911; she died in 1944.
