The Lagarto Stone by Gordon N. Mcintosh

Why would a man risk his life for a mother who abandoned him as an infant? Yet when Doug Sutherland is passed a scrawled note by a mortally-wounded Mexican, he's forced to overcome his resentment and related phobias to rescue her, recover a priceless pre-Hispanic artifact, and battle a ruthless smuggler to save himself.
For Sutherland, a young Chicago entrepreneur, the dying man's note is meaningless and the warning that his Mexican mother is in danger presents a quandary. Even if true, why should he care? She deserted him thirty years earlier under suspicious circumstances. Besides, his life is already complicated by his love life, deadlines for his real estate project, and debilitating nightmares. In his dreams, he's stalked by a "burning man," trapped in a small space, and thrown into an icy water grave, images he associates with his phobias, his mother, and her disappearance from his life.
He tries to convince himself that the message was meant for someone else. But then his apartment is invaded, he receives threatening calls from a Mexican smuggler, the police accuse him of drug dealing, and a DEA agent harasses him. Sucked into a maelstrom, he must fight or become another victim.

My review: I love love love this book. I cannot wait to read another book by this author. He is an amazing writer and I would so read this book like more times. I do not know if you my readers know this about me but I am not one who usually reads the same book multiple times. Even if I love it. I have always been that way. I might have to change that about me. (: Stars I give this book: ***** (5)

I knew when I read the synopsis that the premise was one that had the potential to hold my was right up my alley. I mean, what's not to like? It has archaeology, a little romance, a lot of adventure and some mystery thrown in and a few twists too. The author did not disappoint. Once I started this book, I did not want to put it down. Even though Doug is just your every day real estate developer/former lawyer and his girlfriend is also a lawyer they sure do have the brains and the guts to get themselves out of some real scrapes... This was an action packed, adventure filled ride from beginning to end. I tell you Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt and Giordano would be proud... Fans of those two will enjoy this one. I know that I enjoyed the ingenuity and luck that these two employed throughout the book in order to try to stay a step ahead of the bad guys. I don't really want to say too much about the plot itself because I make it a policy as a reviewer not to be a spoiler... I will just say that when I finished the book I thought to myself that these characters were such that I would like to spend more time with them...I wondered if Mr. Gordon McIntosh had considered writing another book with Doug Sutherland and his Girl...I looked it up, and guess what!?! He sure did! It is called, Death's Crooked Shadow! I have already loaded it onto my Kindle and I have already read the prologue! I have to tell you that as soon as I finish this review and publish it to all of the places that I promised I would...I will be reading that one... So 5 HEARTS for this one!

When a young man turns up at his office carrying a message from his mam, Doug Sutherland's life is turned inside out. Not only is the young man fatally wounded but Doug hasn't spoken or seen his mam for over 30 years. In tracing the young mans movements and actions it turns out that he has deceived a Mexican smuggler who has a lot of influence and power. The Mexican smuggler is determined to find out where his contraband has been hidden and thus threatens not only Doug Sutherland but those he holds dear. On the way to trying to find out what the Mexican wants and keeping himself alive, Doug is taken on a trip to his past and he finds some of the answers to his dreams. Why did his parents split up? Who is the 'burning man' who haunts his dreams? As he gets closer to his mam and the Mexican, all is revealed. A really intriguing storyline, although I did have to read some parts a couple of times to grasp what was going on. Once established and I was back on track I thought the aspect of one greedy individual who wanted everything for himself and either destroyed or controlled everyone that got in his way was a very current topic for today. Wouldn't it also be nice if something happened to us all, so that we could also solve the answers to all our questions and our demons. I found the book refreshing that the author was actually testing the reader, as a thriller I enjoyed the story and am now looking forward to reading the second in the series, Death's Crooked Shadow, as I know what to expect from the author I will be taking my time in order to fully enjoy the read.

So what is the lagarto stone? In basic terms it is a very valuable Mexican artifact. Since it is illegal to sale them, they are sold on the black market for a huge profit by people that steal them. A lot of these people are into drug trade in both Mexico and Chicago. The main character, Doug Sutherland, is drawn into a dangerous game (not of his making) with everyone including the DEA and drug lords. He is warned by a stranger that his mother is in danger - but why should he care if his mother is in danger? She abandoned him when he was a baby and he knows little about her or even cares. But what if he can save a life? Even if it is of someone he doesn't care about. At first he dismisses the warning from the stranger but when he finds out that his girlfriend has been kidnapped, and he is hassled by armed men and drug smugglers, he plummets into a world he never thought he would see. Let me just start with - what a page turner! Man did I enjoy this book! I sat down on Saturday night to start reading and was done before the sun came up - I literally couldn't put it down. What did I like about it? Just about everything. The fast pace, the intrigue and most of all, how the "puzzle" of a story comes together completely in the end. I'm passing this book over to my daughter now (also a voracious reader) - I have no doubt that she will finish it in one night as well. Loved it!!
