About the Author

Jorge Augustín Nicolás Ruiz de Santayana (George Santayana) (1863-1952) was a Spanish-American philosopher and novelist. Educated at Harvard, Santayana wrote in English and considered himself to be an American, although he retained his Spanish citizenship throughout his life and lived in Spain the final four decades of his life. A classical pragmatist, Santayana's main contributions to philosophy include THE SENSE OF BEAUTY, THE LIFE OF REASON, SKEPTICISM AND ANIMAL FAITH, and THE REALMS OF BEING.
