The Lives and the Times
June is an average man leading an average life, with only his name being somewhat non-traditional. Little does he know, however, that such a commonplace task of moving from Bangalore to Delhi to rise up in the corporate ladder will bring him front and center of some interesting happenings, and in contact with strange people. He is being actively pursued by an organization that believes he is its leader, and is someone who will take the organization and ultimately India to its destiny. The organization is facing a nemesis, a part of the government that is attempting to maintain a status quo. And all this takes place on a stage defined as the Indian subcontinent, which is a land that is alive, quite literally that is.
While the setting of the novel is India , the novel focuses on the state of the emerging middle class across the globe. With the rise of this class in countries such as India and China , and its potential to bring about a paradigm shift in the global setup, there is a need to go beyond the media hype. There is an urgent need to explore what constitutes the mindset of this class, and the issues that define it or are defined by it. Some of these issues may be genuine and complex, and some frivolous. What is common to all these issues, however, is that they arouse passion. As Anil, a character in the story, says, “You know, the anger and frustration that the middle class usually exhibits is not because it finds itself lacking on being compared with the best in the world, but rather it is because it is often compared with the poorest.” This story is not about a battle between poverty and affluence. The larger middle class only somewhat perceives this battle, but rarely takes part in it. It is also not about a perfect past and an uncertain future, or about an imperfect past and a future filled with hope. It is about the present.
