About the Author

Harper Paris loves to travel. Her favorite cities in the world are Paris (like her name!) and New York City. She has collected many souvenirs on her travels, including a good-luck coin from Japan and a reindeer-horn pendant from Sweden. She also loves mysteries. When she was a kid, she read Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books after bedtime with a flashlight. She now lives with her family (including two cats and a bunny, who are not good travelers) in Ithaca, New York.

Marcos Calo has worked as a professional artist for more than fourteen years. He has worked in different fields including illustration, animation, and comic books. He lives with his wife and daughter in A Coruña, a small Spanish town by the seaside.

The Mystery in the Forbidden City
“I miss Grandpa Harry’s waffles,” Ella Briar said with a pout.

“I miss the blueberry muffins from Petunia Bakery,” her brother, Ethan, added.

The twins frowned at their plates, which were piled high with fried rice, pickled vegetables, and some foods they didn’t recognize. The Briar family was having breakfast at their hotel, the Beijing Imperial. The large dining room was decorated with red and gold furniture and paintings of swirly dragons.



“But, kids, we’re having an eating adventure!” their dad, Andrew, said as he reached for his chopsticks. “Check out those delicious-looking bao!”

“Our neighbor Mrs. Chen used to make bao when I was growing up,” their mom, Josephine, said with a smile. “My favorites were the ones with sweet beans in them. They tasted like little cakes!”

Ella picked up a bao and bit into it carefully. The steamed bun was warm and soft on the outside and filled with sweet barbecued meat inside. It was actually really good.

She still missed Grandpa Harry’s waffles, though. He always decorated them with chocolate-chip smiley faces. Ella missed everything and everyone back in Brookeston. She knew Ethan did too.



The Briars had been traveling around the world for more than a month now. The reason for their big trip was Mrs. Briar’s job. The Brookeston Times newspaper had hired her to write a travel column, Journeys with Jo!

Gr 1–3—Though twins Ella and Ethan were resistant to journeying across the world with their travel-writer mother in the series opener, The Mystery of the Gold Coin, they now relish their roles as globe-trotting detectives. In Beijing's Forbidden City, the kids find an ancient map and attempt to follow it—only to become lost. Readers will enjoy following the intrepid duo in this lighthearted romp through the imperial palace. As with previous titles, which saw the kids visiting Venice, Paris, and Mumbai, this installment will dole out some solid facts, along with the adventure and intrigue.
