CHAPTER 1

Eve was confused. She let her new friend, Caroline, go home unhappy. At least, it looked as if Caroline's feelings were hurt. Of course, it was Nora, not Eve, who said those mean things to Caroline. Eve didn't do anything wrong. Not really.

So why did Eve have that sick feeling in her stomach? Eve wanted to be friends with both her new neighbor, Caroline, and with Nora. Nora was Eve's best friend since they were little children. They always got along. But Nora didn't seem to like Caroline. Eve asked herself why and remembered clearly what happened earlier that day.

"Nora," said Eve, "this is my new next-door neighbor, Caroline. I've asked her to come to the park with us today."

Instead of smiling, Nora's face got sort of a pinched look. She sneered at Caroline. "Well, how interesting that your little neighbor wants to come along. And what fashion sense she has too. I don't think I've ever seen such a cute dress, with that adorable carrot pattern and a tiny bunny stitched on the pocket."

Eve knew Nora long enough to know when she was being mean. Her words may have been nice words, but the look on Nora's face told the truth.

Eve saw Caroline glance down at her own clothes and then back at Nora. Caroline looked really uncomfortable.

"Oh, I know," continued Nora with a snicker, "my baby sister has the same dress, but of course, she's still in diapers."

Eve was so embarrassed she wished she could disappear. Eve wished Nora would stop talking. All the wishing in the world couldn't stop Nora from saying what she said next.

"Isn't that right, Eve? Doesn't baby Susan have the same dress?"

Nora started to laugh, but Eve was silent. Caroline walked over to Eve and said in a very quiet voice, "I should be getting home. Thanks for inviting me anyway."

As Caroline turned to go, Eve thought she might have seen tears in Caroline's eyes but forgot all about it when Nora said, "Hey, Eve, let's skip the park. My mom said she'd make ice cream sundaes for us. Good thing that neighbor of yours went home. That means more for you and me." Nora gently pulled Eve's arm, and the two walked up the hill toward Nora's house.
