Description: This is an excellent treatise on the peroneal tendons, their normal function and biomechanics, and their abnormal function, pathomechanics, and treatment.
Purpose: A subject normally addressed in a chapter or two in most textbooks of foot and ankle medicine or surgery, this book represents the culmination of over 30 years of study on the peroneal tendons by Dr. Sobel. It most definitely meets its objectives and provides an energetic platform from which to educate its readership.
Audience: This book is aimed at orthopedic and podiatric surgeons, those with an interest in sports medicine, and residents, fellows, and students associated with those disciplines. Physical therapists may find it of interest, too. Dr. Sobel has made the study of the peroneals his life's work and is certainly the expert on this subject. In writing this book, Dr. Sobel has assembled a like-minded contributing authorship from the orthopedic, podiatric, and research communities.
Features: Arranged over 25 chapters, the book is well illustrated by line drawings and black and white and color plates of first-class quality. Two chapters are particularly noteworthy: one on rehabilitation of the peroneal apparatus following surgery, and another on peroneal tendon pathology associated with calcaneal fractures. These two chapters illustrate the depth of specialism the book aspires to. It is very, very good.
Assessment: There is no comparison text I can think of that is anything like this book. It is essential reading for any active foot and ankle surgeon, irrespective of specialty. Residents and students should be aware of the existence of this book and refer to it before involving themselves in the care of any patients with peroneal pathology. In short, this book is a must-have for any medical library.
