The Pinnacles: A Novel of the South/West
This account of American religion and politics into the 21st century places aspiring citizens from the South and West finally in Washington, D.C., as they seek to reach a pinnacle of personal achievement. In four sectionsRoots, Threat, Change, and Directionthe novel traces the lives of three characters striving for wealth in oil, position in religion, and power in politics in their interaction with local and national organizations. Greed for money and lust for power contaminate the populous and the piousa struggle of the impoverished against the wealth of the aspiring. The story highlights common citizens striving for greatness and finding contamination within a misdirected conservatism. The competing of progressivism with self-defined conservatism involves suspicion of change, appeal to personal prejudice, and anti-scientific contentionsset in the final section within a national presidential election. Unique to this fictional form, the novel is prefaced and concluded with news articles and references to fictional sources that highlight each era of the plot.
The author has experienced the challenges to American citizens as they struggle to blend learning and experience for a successful vocational and personal future. Teacher of literature and writer throughout his career, Dr. Traugott has brought together academic disciplines with literature and life to find meaningful application of learning in the modern setting. As lecturer, writer, and editor, he has had experience in a variety of disciplines: science, religion, English, business, history, philosophy, and liberal arts.
