The Rage of Small People
November 1824. Can the murder of a 24-year-old military officer change the course of a nation? While the revolution rages in the Peloponnese, dark passions, unspoken loves, and secret ambitions shatter ideals and lead to a civil war that upends everything. The treacherous murder of Panos, the eldest son of Theodoros Kolokotronis—destined to become the governor of the new nation—ignites the rage of the small people. His father takes matters into his own hands and searches for the killer. Along the way, he revisits the past and relives the events of the revolution from a new perspective. Who is the murderer, and how much is Europe involved in the assassination? Why was it unacceptable for the new country to be governed by a Greek, especially one who was a revolutionary? What interests shaped the country's destiny? What roles did Metternich, Napoleon, Tsar Alexander, Lord Byron, as well as Mary Shelley, Beethoven, and the Duchess of Placentia play? The odyssey to uncover Panos's killer—through constant twists and revelations—sheds new light on events and on the contradictory character of his father. How did an ordinary man, made of the usual stuff—desires, vision, doubt, action, love, and fury—become a hero so great that his people believed in him like a god and Europe feared him like the devil?
