About the Author

Baroness Orczy (1865-1947) was a Hungarian-born British author of adventure fiction, best known for her play and novel "The Scarlet Pimpernel." Born into the aristocracy of Hungary, Baroness Orczy married a poor illustrator and they would work as translators to supplement their modest earnings. Embarking on a writing career, the Baroness struggled at first until she struck upon the idea of writing a play with her husband about an English aristocrat who leads a double life as an international adventurer who travels from Britain to France to rescue French noblemen threatened with death following the French Revolution. The play was a huge success, prompting Baroness Orczy into publishing the story as a novel, which was so popular that it finally brought the couple financial security and inspired the Baroness to pen a half-dozen sequels. Politically active and deeply involved in the war effort during the Second World War, Orczy continued to write plays and novels for the rest of her life, but none of them achieved the same success and notoriety as the first book of the Scarlet Pimpernel series.
