The Soul of a Black Woman: Journeys Through Poetry

"The art of just “being” is easy, but “being” “black” and a “woman” in a world that criticizes you for being are all three, is a continuous battle that will be fought until the end of time."
~Meika J Cole

The Soul of a Black Woman: Journeys Through Poetry, serves as an ethnographic account, describing the emotions and thoughts of African- Women, as it relates to culture, identity, representation, and spirituality.

Using poetry and simple narratives, the author divides the book into two sections: (1) Dark places and (2) Welcome Back to the Light. The author focuses on stories of loss, redemption, and self-worth, while offering balance through God’s word. You may laugh, cry, or may get upset as you revisit those moments, but it’s all about getting to the place of total healing.

About the Author

Meika J. Cole is a mother, daughter, sister, and friend first; activist and critical cultural scholar second. Born and raised in Pontiac, Michigan, Meika’s love for writing, speaking, and her aspiration to get involved in the lives of Black women led her on an enriching road to spiritual discovery. Meika attended Oakland University in Rochester, MI, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree in communication, with emphasis on critical cultural communication. After receiving her undergraduate degree, Meika began her graduate studies with the sole purpose of studying communication from the Black perspective. She went into the program with one question in mind, “Why do African-American men and women suffer in their relationships with each other?” With this, she began studying discourses involving power and gender roles within the Black collective. Over time, her research showed her another missing dynamic which centered around the representation of African-American women in media and how those images complicate how Black women viewed themselves. Meika completed a research study centered around Steve Harvey’s concept of how women should think like men. She competed in the 2015 Michigan Undergraduate and Graduate Conference, where she received the top paper panel award for her work titled, “The Steve Harvey Effect: Has Acting Like a Lady and Thinking Like a Man Correct African-American Gender Relations?” Meika has been a featured conference presenter at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, MI and Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI. She was a featured speaker/blogger for MotheringJustice.org and as a panel presenter for the State of Black Women in Michigan Conference speaking on Black women in the media in 2015. Meika lives in Auburn Hills, Michigan with her daughter, Laila. She is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in educational leadership and is working on her second book release, Broken Woman: A 30-Day Devotional to Overcome Spiritual Brokenness, to be released Summer 2018.
