About the Author

Karen Burkinshaw Hoffman was born in Burke South Dakota and lived her childhood years with her parents and five other siblings on a ranch in the Sand Hills of Nebraska. Her imagination was developed by the many different experiences of ranch life. Without the use of a TV set, she came up with the entertainment for her brothers and sisters with her stories, with the content matter being made up as she went along. Writing short stories and poems has been, and still is, her favorite pastime. Karen is the mother of two grown sons and, currently, four granddaughters. She is married to a wonderful and supportive husband and works full time as a nurse in the geriatric field. Her love of the great outdoors and animals of all kinds has helped foster the development of the imagination needed for her stories to come alive.

CHAPTER 1

Once upon a time, there was a mouse named Tee Low who lived in a lush green meadow with his parents and brothers and sisters and several other mouse families. He was just your usual friendly little mouse, as normal as the rests of the mice, except he had a knot at the end of his tail.

Now Tee Low tried everything he could think of to get the knot out of his tail. He soaked it, he pulled it, he rubbed lotion and ointment on it, but alas, the knot remained.

A lot of the other mice in the meadow made fun of him. They called him a cripple, said he looked different and didn't fit in with the rest of them because their tails were long and smooth, with no lumps or bumps, and they could run their combs through their tails with ease and Tee Low couldn't.

They wouldn't let him play games with them, like Catch the Cricket or Pass the Walnut, because his tail would get in the way and slow him down.

Tee Low was very sad. He wanted to have friends and be liked, accepted, and loved by all the other mice in the meadow.

Then one day, he was sitting alone on a toadstool feeling sorry for himself when a big cold, wet raindrop splashed on his head. Then there was another and another. It started to thunder and lightning. The rain came down harder and faster.
