How much can a man take before he breaks?

1,843 days. That's how long I survived in that hellhole. They tried to break me, but I resisted. And I owe it all to the memory of warm summer nights, the scent of peaches, and the one woman who loved me more than I ever deserved to be loved. Now, I'll do anything to get back to her.

Only Shelby

Overview

How much can a man take before he breaks?

1,843 days. That's how long I survived in that hellhole. They tried to break me, but I resisted. And I owe it all to the memory of warm summer nights, the scent of peaches, and the one woman who loved me more than I ever deserved to be loved. Now, I'll do anything to get back to her.

Only Shelby Eubanks isn't the girl I left behind all those years ago. She's someone else, a stranger. My Shelby-my little green-eyed firecracker-would never give up her dreams, would never disappear into her mother's ambitions. But I won't give up on her. On us. I may be broken, and scarred, and not the man I used to be, but I will do whatever it takes to remind her of the story of us.

Wow. That's all I can say. This was an incredibly heart wrenching and beautiful story. I loved it and I loved the characters. The story felt very real. Tara Sivec has such an incredible talent of making the reader feel like they are experiencing the story right along the characters. You feel invested in their stories. It doesn't matter if it's a comedy or something serious...you are always right there and can feel what they are feeling. What a spectacular writer.

Tara Sivec is an amazing author with a very well rounded repertoire of novels. I just knew this one was going to pull at the heartstrings a little but this may very well be her best yet. It is RAW, GRITTY, TRAGIC, EMOTIONAL, SWEET, and BEAUTIFUL! For me this was one of those stories which I had to put down. I just could not keep reading. I needed to take breathers. I needed to digest. I needed to let the pain settle. The pain just seemed to jump off the pages but so did the love and emotion, the caring, and the passion. This novel centers around Eli and Shelby, the war hero and the southern belle. It is a second chance romance which you definitely want to read. It will stick with you long after you put it down. It may be an ugly cry book for you. It was for me. "I can't take back the choices I made. I can't erase the things I did no matter how much I wish I could, but you need to know I never let go...It was always you, only you."

How can I put into words how this book made me feel? The raw emotion I experienced reading Eli and Shelby's story was heartbreaking. Ms. Sivec gutted me from page 11 until the last page. How was Eli able to survive all that he endured? How was Shelby able to continue to live without him? The Story of Us was amazing! Ms. Sivec's ability to make the reader climb into the book and feel every emotion that the characters experience is a prime example of excellent writing. Honestly, my review of this book is 10 stars! This is a must have! Thank you Ms. Sivec for giving us another powerful, wonderful story!

Why do I always have the hardest time writing a review of a great book? Maybe because there's so much to say when you read a book that grips your heart and leaves you feeling so many different emotions. Where do you even begin to tell other people how awesome this book was to read? My less than eloquent writing skills will never ever be able to describe the awesomeness that is this book. The Story Of Us takes you from terrified and sad to hope full and excited and that's not even half way through the book. Just when you think you know what's about to happen, BOOM! Total shocker and didn't see that coming. Then your back on the emotional roller coaster again with more feelings. This book is a whole new level of romance from Tara Sivec. A military themed contemporary romance with such a poignant love story. A wonderful summer vacation read that you won't want to put down. So call the cabana boy over to refill your drink and read this book!

Raw, emotional, beautiful, sweet and tragic. There are not enough adjectives in the world to describe all of the feels in this amazing story. I absolutely LOVED Eli and Shelby’s story. And Rylan…sweet, messy, crazy, man-bun-having Rylan. I love that this story was beautiful and painful at the same time…at certain points I felt like the pain was jumping off the page right at me. I was completely hooked from the very first page and I didn’t put it down until I was done. By chapter 29 I was sobbing and trying to read through my tears. Those who have read it will know why…so I won’t give anything away. One of the things I loved most was that I didn’t see it coming. It’s not often that a book catches me by surprise…but it’s one of my very favorite things when it does. I have read every single book Tara has ever written...and I truly love them all. But The Story of Us is my new favorite. It’s one of those books that will stick with you for a while after you read it and that is ALWAYS the sign of a great story!

The Story of Us is a love conquers all, second chance romance read. The leads have been through years of torture. There's lots of manipulation from forces outside of their relationship and also some plain ole crappy luck. Although, they have been around the people equivalent of poisonous snakes, both have good hearts. Both are dealing with physical and mental scars and keeping secrets, and they will do anything to protect each other. Eli and Shelby miss the relationship they once had, but they have to get everything out into the open to salvage what they have. This book is an emotional rollercoaster with some unexpected twists.

Eli and Shelby were in love, the kind of love that most spend a lifetime trying to find, but they came from different worlds, and their differences caused them to part. Eli left their little town to serve his country, and Shelby followed in the footsteps that her mother paved for her, and the love they shared slowly slipped away. Eli found himself being captured and held against his will by the enemy and everyone back home began to lose faith and started to really believe he was gone. Shelby mourned the loss of Eli and the life they had together. Then she met another man, one handpicked by her mother, and soon found herself engaged to be a wife to man she didn't really love, but walking away from him was not permitted. She has an image to uphold, and this man is good for appearances, and her mother's political reputation. Shelby knows it isn't right, it isn't the life she wants to live, but what can she do... Then Shelby gets the surprise of her life, Eli is alive and headed stateside, and she wants nothing more to be with him, but there are expectations in place for her, and Eli doesn't fit into the plan. But Eli has a plan of his own, to win back the woman who stole his heart all those years ago, and create the life with her they had always dreamed about... come hell or high water. But the woman he finds when he returns home is a mere shell of the woman he left behind, and she is engaged to marry a man he knows isn't right for her... now he must remind her of the love they shared, and hope it's enough to win back her heart, and put light back into the eyes of woman who holds his heart. This breathtakingly beautiful story completely wrecked me, it broke my heart and then little by little began to mend it back together again. It was a heart-wrenching story about two broken souls who needed to find love again, needed it to heal them, and bring them back to life. and their touching journey to find it moved me beyond words. It has been a while since I have read something so powerful and moving, and I have to say I am quite impressed with this first time read, it is definitely one of the best first reads I have read in a really long time. I highly recommend you get your hands on this one, it was an eye opening experience for me, one that stirred my emotions, moved me to tears, and is sure to linger with me for a long while. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.

***5 ‘Only You, Always You’ Stars*** From the first page I was hooked and good lord did those feels start ramping up and didn't stop until I read the last word (actually the little teaser at the end still has them going but that's a story for another time). Eli and Shelby took me on an emotional roller coaster of a ride, the good, the bad, and the ugly, and I loved every moment! Eli and Shelby took me on a roller coaster ride. I hurt for them. I liked them. The frustrated the hell out of me and made me want to reach out and smack some sense into them. I wanted to commit acts of violence against those that hurt them. And I wanted to hug them and tell them that things would get better little by little each day. And I admired the hell out of them for their tenacity and strength even when I felt it was a bit misdirected. In the end though, I adore the people they were always meant to be. Their journey was filled with emotional landmines and every time I landed on one it brought out a different emotional response while showing me just why Eli and Shelby were destined to be together. I loved the method used to show us who they were to each other before they were split apart and how it brought them back together in the end. I’ve read a good portion of Ms. Sivec’s RomCom’s, and still remember the Bronie’s fondly, but this is the first non-RomCom romance I’ve dived into and loved it! We get a well balanced mix of heart, humor, angst and heat. The characters, both the main and secondary, were so well written that I felt as if I could reach out and touch them. The twists and turns were well thought out and executed and when each was brought to light they all made perfect sense. This really was a great read and one I recommend to anyone who loves a well written second chance romance. And as for that ‘tease’/excerpt of Ms. Sivec’s next book at the end? Let me tell you that I’m already making grabby hands at it! ~ Copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley & voluntarily reviewed ~
