The Sunset of My Life
A man goes through the four seasons of his life much too quickly. The hustle and frantic pace of life blinds him to the wonders that God puts before him daily—the butterfly that alights upon a small flower completely missed, the sunrises and sunsets without fanfare as he toils to his eventual end.
If he is lucky, he realizes the folly of his ways and slows to see the beauty before him, appreciate the little things, the quiet things, the ripple on the pond, stopping to breathe and reflect, and perhaps to listen to the soft sounds of God's great work.
I have entered the sunset of my life.
My time on earth ordained by God wanes like the setting of the sun, and as the brilliant colors light the sky, so does my love for what God has given me through my many years.
To see the singular snowflake, hear the cry of the chickadee, I invite you to come with me as my stories tell of my journey to this moment in time.
Sit back in a quiet spot, open this book, feel its pages, and see what I have seen.
May God bless and keep you and, perhaps, slow you down.

About the Author

Joseph R. Lange was born March 20, 1954. One of ten children—five sisters and four brothers—he grew up in Owen, Wisconsin, and then at the age of ten, he moved to Abbotsford, Wisconsin.
Growing up east of Smallville, he spent his days trying to be a mountain man where there were no mountains, hunting and trapping in areas now occupied by buildings. Only memories remain of the adventures in the deep forest now forever gone. BB gun fights and Bonger hits…God, the adventures he had.
Many an adventure was shared with his younger brother James, who is mentioned a few times in the Thoughts Trilogy: Thoughts from a Tree Stand, Wisdom’s Harvest East of Smallville, and Contemplations through the Fog of My Life.
The Misophonic Murders, the first of the Dr. Trevor Knight’s mysteries, was soon followed by The Portland Autopsies, Heartless in the Bronx, Cross of the Ghost Friar, and Boogaloo in the Bayou.
Thoughts, Moments, and Memories is a return to some of his favorites from fifty years of observing God’s wonders held deep within the forest and woodlots of Wisconsin.
The Sunset of My Life is still another collection of his favorite stories.
Many occupations were had in his life—gas station worker, construction worker, taxidermist, electrician, truck driver, deputy sheriff, facilities manager, security supervisor, and facilities director for St. Joseph’s Hospital and Marshfield Clinic. He retired as systems director of facilities and maintenance for the Marshfield Clinic Health Systems.
He is married to Michelle and has two wonderful daughters, Helen and Krissy. God gave him four grandsons: Trevor, Tanner, Jack, and Joseph. What the love and encouragement of a mother can do for a young man trying to find his way without a penny in his pocket.
If you get anything from reading these memories of these bygone times, understand how short life is and what truly matters and, more importantly, what does not.
