A good read, although not a quick, fun read in the normal western genre. It¿s well written, Clark¿s excellent use of prose imagery sometimes drags and demands that the reader focus sharply less he miss some hidden clue therein. But that aside one will be glad that he read the book. The setting, on an isolated ranch, in the Sierra Nevadas allows Clark to study one family, their guest and their hired man, each pitted against an early winter storm, themselves, and a natural predator. Some have articulated it as just a dysfunctional family, but in various degrees, what family isn¿t dysfunctional? Transposed it may be as revealing of the 21st century than as of the 19th century.
