The World From A Schwinn
"The World From A Schwinn" is a coming of age novel based in the southern city of Bessemer, Alabama beginning in 1963 during the civil rights era. Taylor Denton, an 11 year old kid is the featured character (along with his Schwinn bike) who grows up in poverty on the wrong side of life. As blacks in the south lived out the daily plight of racial segregation, Taylor lived the daily burden of economic segregation. His life changed that Christmas of 1963 when he received (against all odds) and with the help of his grandfather a gift that he wanted more than anything in the world, a Schwinn Stingray bike. The moment his hands took the grips and his feet touched the pedals Taylor Denton's life changed and his destiny was charted. Vicariously we ride with Taylor through life across social, economic and racial lines where he experiences a world he would have never known had he not received that bike.
After a heartrending encounter with a black kid poorer than he was named Monday Johnson, Taylor forms a bond and friendship with Monday that was against cultural acceptance of that time. When the two of them witness the murder of a prominent business man their worlds are turned upside down and they go on the ride of their lives. Although "The World From A Schwinn" is a coming of age novel, it is filled with humor, suspense, mystery, mayhem, drama and loss. There is a surprise ending to the story that is sure to warm and move the heart of the reader. In this novel we look through Taylor Denton's eyes and see the world from a Schwinn.
If you enjoy novels that have that southern charm and history accompanied by a great storyline, then you will love "The World From A Schwinn".
