Third Son's a Charm by Shana Galen

"Highly entertaining, humorous, action-packed, and so much fun!" —Night Owl Reviews, 4 stars for The Rogue You Know

Ewan Mostyn thinks a job as a duke's daughter's bodyguard will be easy—but Lady Lorraine has a few tricks up her sleeve that spark an undeniable passion

Fiercely loyal to his friends and comrades, Ewan Mostyn is the toughest in a group of younger sons of nobility who met as soldiers and are now trying desperately to settle back into peaceful Society. Ewan trusts his brawn more than his brains, but when he's offered a job watching the Duke of Ridlington's stubbornly independent daughter, he finds both are challenged.

Lady Lorraine wants none of her father's high-handed ways, and she'll do everything in her power to avoid her distressingly attractive bodyguard—until she lands herself in real trouble. Lorraine begins to see Ewan's protectiveness in a new light, and she can only hope that her stoic guardian will do for her what he's always done—fight for what he wants.

Third Son's a Charm (The Survivors, #1) by Shana Galen is highly entertaining and enjoyable read. I love Ewan and Lorrie. A great couple that share great chemistry and witty banter. These two really strike sparks off each other. Well written and has a fun plot. Ewan is so strong but with a wounded emotional edge. Lorrie is feisty, sassy and determined. This is a passionate, sweet, steamy, tender, action filled, humorous romance. This is a wonderful book that I highly recommend. I am posting an honest review after reading an ARC copy of this book.

I loved Ewan and Lorraine's story!! Ewan, OMG, what can I say...my heart broke for this man when I learn what he had gone through as a child. To have gone through what he went through and come out the man that he is, tells me more about his character than anything else. LOVED him!! I really liked Lorraine too. She was a little annoying at the beginning of the story, but she grew on me with time. I'm very excited for this new series!! I can't wait to see who Galen writes about next!

Ewan Mostyn is the third son of the Duke of Pembroke. He joined an elite group in the military and was called the Protector. Lady Lorraine, was the only daughter of the Duke of Ridlington, thought she was in love and tried to elope. Her father hired Ewan to watch her. There were some places where it got so funny. I enjoyed the bantering between his group of friends. This was such a great story and the story line was well written, easy to read and I read it in one sitting, I just could not put it down. He had never felt love of anyone or really been touched, This was heart warming and full of friendship. I received this ARC free and voluntarily reviewed.

What a great series this will be! During the war with France, a group of 3rd sons were recruited for what we would call a special ops unit. Some of them survived and created the Survivors’ Club. Most of them still have nightmares. Ewan Mostyn thinks himself a lackwit because he can’t read. His nickname during the war was the Protector. He currently works as a bouncer at the Draven Club, a gaming hell. On his way to work he saves a woman, Lady Lorraine, who ran out in the street to save her dog. Lorraine’s father, the Duke of Ridlington, knows nothing about the dog incident but wants to hire Ewan to protect his daughter from a gentleman she thinks she loves. Ridlington knows the man does not love her but is after her fortune. Ewan tries to refuse, but when he learns the man is his hated cousin, Francis Mostyn, he agrees. Lorraine is very attracted to Ewan and it is a fun, great read to their HEA. Along the way, there is another couple rekindling their love. Thanks to Shana Galen for the ARC. I won’t write spoilers, but I can highly recommend this. It’s a wonderful book and am looking forward to the next one in this series. No one asked for or influenced this review.

Loved the story of Lorraine and Ewan. She was a feisty young lady who thought she knew what she wanted. She thinks she's in love with Ewan's cousin, Francis and Ewan is given the job to protect her from herself. I really liked that he never actually said anything against Francis to start out, except that he didn't love her and only wanted her dowry. She slowly figured it out by comparing Ewan's actions vs what Francis had said about him and his own actions. One thing Ewan says over and over, he doesn't lie. (Except to himself) I do have to say I hope we find out in the series if Lorraine does end up helping him overcome his problem! Thank you NetGalley for the copy!

The common practice among upper crust nobles to have an heir and a spare meant that 3rd sons like Ewan Mostyn were either sent into the clergy or the military. As Ewan was not suited for a life of religious zeal the military gained an excellent soldier. Now as he and his fellow survivors must find a way to live after the horrors of a war that trimmed their group from 30 to 12 Ewan finds himself approached with a very strange request from the Duke of Ridlington, who wishes to hire him as a bodyguard for his daughter Lorraine. Funny thing was his first instinct was to say no right up to the moment the Duke explained why he needed Ewan in the first place. That information changed the no to a resounding yes and what the naive ex-soldier thought would be a simple assignment soon became anything but! Due to not only the lady herself’s tendency to resist his efforts but their explosive chemistry as well. Lady Lorraine Ridlington is not only a spoiled young miss but she is also clever, lively and entirely too stubborn for her own good. Having made up her mind that a certain someone is her life’s love and the man she is meant to marry it appears nothing her father says will change that conviction. Thus begins a series of events that would cause any parents hair to whiten overnight. What I took away from this book, besides the obvious, was that it is very easy to mistake someones intelligence when they do not respond like everyone else around them from an early age. Especially when it comes to young children with learning disabilities, they are easily discouraged and have a tendency to be labeled slow of wit even when that is far from the truth. That is not something that later on in their life that they overcome without having someone with patience and perseverance help them to do so, and some never have that help. What I also took away from this book is something I have always known, the heart wants what the heart wants and in Ewan and Lorraine’s case their class disparity ceased to matter when push came to shove. As it should have long before things became almost too late. Ewan was portrayed as an honorable gentleman, even when Lorraine managed to stir his blood almost to the boiling point! For the both of them falling in love with each other was never something they imagined happening. Ewan Mostyn may not have charm, may not have a voluble nature, may be rough around the edges but he makes up for it in spades with his loyalty to others and his ability to inspire loyalty in return. Lady Lorraine Ridlington is a lovely, lively, passionate young woman who also has a stubborn nature that sometimes gets in the way of her making wise choices. When these two are brought together as bodyguard and his charge to protect, the sparks fly. This was a true case of not really fitting in, of longing to belong and two people who found exactly what they were both missing when they least expected it. Especially not together! I could kick myself for not reading Shana Galen's books sooner. This is a wry, delightful story of the wild, willful, clever and a bit clumsy Duke of Ridlington's daughter, Lady Lorraine and a war hero who doesn't know his worth. I loved the progression of this journey of discovery. Of what is important in a person and their true character from their actions, not by what they say. Lady Lorrie mostly ran wild at the Duke's country estate and now has been brought to "heel" to join society and find a worthy husband. She's been taken in by the handsome and charming Francis Mostyn. He's not in love with her, he's after her very substantial dowry. Enter Ewan Mostyn, third son of the Earl of Pembroke a war hero who suffers from dyslexia and has been labels stupid by his family. He is one of The Survivors, Lieutenant Colonel Draven's special forces unit in the Napoleonic wars. This suicide unit had 30 members and after the war was down to 12. Ewan was called Protector as he was the "brawn" and was driven to protect his brothers-in-arms. He knows in his heart he's not stupid but he can't read. His unit brothers protect and value him. The Duke asks Ewan to be Lorraine's bodyguard since he can mix in society and is the cousin to Frances. And so starts our story of Ewan learning his true worth as a person and Lorraine learning to see into someone's heart to find their character. Thank you Sourcebooks and Shana Galen for the free NetGalley ARC of this story for review. I so enjoy Shana's author's voice and humor in her stories.

This is a thoughtful entertaining romantic read. The characters are as different as night and day. But their shortcomings and their skills work perfectly together. But can they make a good couple or just good friends?

Ewan is a survivor. He's strong, broad shouldered and his presence intimidates people. He's the third son of an Earl, a father who's never appreciated him enough because he doesn't believe in Ewan's intelligence. Ewan's lifelong struggles with his mean cousin Francis are still going on and Francis keeps winning. When Ewan can avoid his cousin's destruction of the life of his next intended victim by accepting a job as a protector, preventing Francis from marrying Lady Lorraine, he takes it. Ewan is supposed to keep an eye on Lorraine. She's already tried to elope with Francis and desperately wants to marry him. Ewan thinks marrying his cousin would be a huge mistake and his task is to stop meetings between Lorraine and Francis from happening. Will he be able to protect Lorraine from the man who probably has an ulterior motive for wanting to marry her? Lorraine tries to escape the confinements of her home. She wants freedom and she's determined to follow her heart. As soon as Ewan appears on the scene, it becomes incredibly difficult to sneak out. He might be a man of few words, but Lorraine seems to perfectly understand him. When he saves her from danger several times her opinion of him slowly changes. Will it change enough to listen to his advice or is Lorraine still trying to do something stupid in the name of love? Is Francis really her one true love or is there a chance she could love another man more? Third Son's a Charm is a fantastic romantic story. Ewan is an adorable man. I immediately loved his chivalrous personality. He's kind, caring and protective. He's also tough, brave and robust. He's the ideal man to protect Lady Lorraine. She has a fierce personality, she's headstrong, smart and inventive and keeps attracting trouble. They're constantly challenging each other, which was a true delight to see. I absolutely loved the chemistry between them. It's impossible not to admire Ewan, he's such a sweet person and while he can easily defend himself, he also has an endearing vulnerability. I really enjoyed watching Lady Lorraine peel off his multiple fascinating layers one by one. They are a fabulous pair and I loved every single page of their story. Shana Galen has a terrific descriptive writing style. She makes the beginning of the nineteenth century come to life in an incredible way. I was intrigued by the balls, the beautiful gowns, the rules of society, the schemes and the plotting and the many interesting family relationships. I love it when a story puts a big smile on my face and Third Son's a Charm definitely falls into the category of books that made me happy. It's entertaining, filled with surprising twists and turns and beautiful romance, suspenseful and wonderfully charming. I highly recommend this brilliant book.

Full of suspense, angst, emotionally touching. Lorraine & Ewan sizzle as they clash in a battle of wits. Both are strong in character & stand up for what they believe. Love Lorraine as she matures & remains steadfast & a woman of strengh. & oh boy- Ewan is overwhelming. Got a little teary eyed in how he viewed himself surviving childhood abuse, both physically & even more important, emotionally.

Third son's a charm is THE SURVIVORS #1. It is written by Shana Galen. It is the story of Ewan Mostyn and Lady Lorraine. Lady Lorraine is an independent thinking, young lady. She is used to doing things that her father doesn't necessarily approve of. She tries eloping with a man named Francis. Her father being in distress for his daughter's reputation, hires a bodyguard to keep her from trying to elope again. Ewan Mostyn is fierce and loyal. He had gone off to be a soldier, but he has come home to find peace after war. Ewan is third son of his father's and part of a group of younger sons of nobility. He is working with his brawn in a gaming hell. He is hired by the Duke of Ridlington to watch over and guard his daughter. Ewan is challenged by Lorraine's stubbornness and independence. Lorraine tries Ewan's patience constantly, and she lands in a bit of trouble. She has to hope that her guardian will fight for what he loves, something he has always done. I enjoyed their story. I like how Lorraine gets to know Ewan better than practically anyone else. I like how Ewan sees Lorraine for the strong woman she is becoming. This book has humor, passion, love and is very enjoyable.

I received a copy from Net Galley. A wonderfully delightful read. The story of the Protector, soldier Ewan, and the Lady Lorraine is a well thought out, completely developed story full of robust characters and a storyline that most certainly does not disappoint. The added conflict of Lorraine's attraction to Ewan's cousin is just a bonus. Absolutely loved it.

I had so much fun reading this historical romance! I have to admit that the cover of this book is what first grabbed my attention. I am always a sucker for pretty covers and the cover of this book is simply gorgeous. I have enjoyed Shana Galen's work in the past and this sounded like a good story so I knew that I would have to read it. It turned out to be a very enjoyable read that was really hard to put down. Ewan knows his place in life. He is the third son of an Earl and is therefore rather useless to his family. He has been a solider and is known for some of his brave acts but that hasn't changed his father's opinion of him. Many see Ewan as a dimwit because he has been unable to learn to read. When he is offered a position to guard a Duke's daughter, he decides to take the job. Lorrie really wants to marry. So much so that she has recently tried to elope with her love, Francis. Lorrie is determined to make the marriage happen and believes that she and Francis are in love. The Duke opposes the match and tasks Ewan with making sure it does not happen. Ewan becomes a permanent fixture at all of the society events attended by Lorrie and her family. I loved these two together! Ewan tends to doubt himself since he has been told he is dumb his whole life. Lorrie sees him for the intelligent man that he truly is. Lorrie believes that she is in love with Francis but she soon learns that love is something very different. This pair had a lot of wonderful chemistry with each other and complimented each other quite nicely. I would recommend this book to fans of historical romance. The book is filled with wonderful characters and a few exciting moments. I can't wait to read the next book in this delightful series! I received an advance reader edition of this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca via NetGalley.

This book is now one of my favorites! Great characters and relationships. Written very well with details that make you feel like your in the book. Nice to see a story about more than just a guy chasing a girl to get her into bed. The characters had depth and the plot was very well thought out. Would definitely read it again and glad I bought it. Can't wait for the next book!

Evan Mostyn, third (and mostly disowned) son of the Earl of Pembroke, is a brave man. He is one of “The Survivors”. Despite the suicidal missions, out of a group of 30 noble sons, he returned from war as one of “Draven’s Dozen”. In Third Son’s A Charm, author Shana Galen shows us the value of this third son. Known as “The Protector”, Ewan is powerfully built. As a part owner of Langely’s gaming hell, this golden-haired giant sometimes acts as bouncer. It is here that we first meet him. A man of few words, Ewan can handle himself in a fight. Enter the Duke of Ridlington. The Duke needs someone to protect his daughter from a fortune hunter and a group of criminals kidnapping heiresses. Who better to ask than “The Protector”? Little does Ewan know, but the Duke’s daughter is none other than the daft woman he saved after she ran in front of a carriage to save her puppy who had slipped his lead. Interesting And Approachable Characters The characters in this story are very interesting and approachable. The way the author describes Ewan’s reading disability (which of course we know is dyslexia but wouldn’t have been diagnosed in 1816) and his struggles, have you really feeling his pain. With Lady Lorraine, the Duke’s daughter, you find a young woman who is just looking for love. Unfortunately in the person of Francis Mostyn, Ewan’s Cousin. Francis is a particularly unsuitable and unworthy person who tortured Ewan as a child. No wonder Ewan is happy, even eager, to thwart Francis’ designs on Lady Lorraine. She doesn’t see Francis as the opportunist he is, but you have to admire her strength of personality and loyalty. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the rest of the series. Available for pre-order are "No Earls Allowed" and "An Affair with a Spare". With 12 men in “Draven’s Dozen” I look forward to lots more to follow. This review is in response to a free copy of the book given to me by the publisher in hopes of an honest review/ KriisGaia

What a great start to a new series. The cover is gorgeous and instantly draws you in. The heroine is a bit spoiled, but beautiful and knows how to use her charm. The hero is strong, a man of few words and likes to live simply. When asked to be a body guard for the heroine, he thinks that it will be an easy job. That's where the fun of the story begins. Ewan quickly found a place in my heart. He is now one of my favorite heroes. Lorrie is witty, wily and wonderful. Ms. Galen has delivered an exceptional story that promises many more in a series that will continue to captivate me for quite some time.

Third Son's a Charm by Shana Galen is a delightful book with a lot of charm. And who can resist that cover? Ewan Moysyn is a man who would intimidate most men, by adventurous Lady Lorraine is far from frightened by the man who was hired to guard her. Will he be able to keep her out of trouble or will trouble find the both of them? I was provided a free copy of Third Son's a Charm by Shana Galen from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

group of men that society considered expendable all survived the war with napoleon in third son's a charm. each of them played a role on their squadron, but now, back in society, they have to adjust to being expendable again. ewan mostyn is known as the protector, his massive size and brute strength saved more than one of his comrade's lives out in the field. and now that he's returned home, as the unfavored third son of an earl he mainly guards the doors at a gaming club. ewan prefers to do things with his hands, which isn't what society considers civilized. but that's not the only reason he doesn't fit in. as a child, he had a hard time learning, and even now he is unable to read without getting terrible headaches and mocked for his trouble. when the duke of ridlington offers him a job guarding his daughter in order to prevent her from eloping with ewan's wastrel cousin, francis, he takes the job expecting it to be easy. but lady lorraine isn't easy. she's stubborn and curious and leaps into things without thinking. she says absolutely every thought that passes through her head. and at first she's terribly annoyed with her father and her relentless giant of a bodyguard. but the more she gets to know the viking, which is what she calls ewan, the more she wonders if she really does know what love is all about. and the more she learns about who ewan is as a person, the more she doubts that francis is telling her the truth. and then she starts to realize that perhaps the man for her is the man who would lay down his life for her in an instant. he's the man she can't stop thinking about. he's the man who she misses when they spend time apart. ewan loves her. but he doesn't feel worthy. he's so big but his shortcomings have always made him feel small. lady lorraine she's a potential in him that not many others have. but how can the unwanted third son of an earl be the man for the daughter of a fabulously wealthy duke? i loved watching the relationship between ewan and lorrie grow, and i look forward to seeing more of lord draven's men in future series, perhaps a story for each of the remaining eleven survivors? **third son's a charm will publish on november 7, 2017. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/sourcebooks casablanca in exchange for my honest review.
