About the Author

The short of it is that I was an Air Force Fighter pilot. In 1998, I was a senior on my high school newspaper, and I was deciding between UC Berkeley and the Air Force Academy. I grew up in the Bay Area of California, and I was a bit hippieish, so Berkeley was a no-brainer. I believed in peace and equality. In choosing the Air Force Academy, it was like a young reporter was going undercover into the heart of the US military-industrial complex, the Republican party in middle America, and the capital of Christian evangelicalism, Colorado Springs. The next decade of my life was like a version of "Democracy in America," a walk around America through the eyes of a young gay kid. I went to our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I ended it all by going AWOL from the military. That put me in jail in Washington D.C. in a cell next to a famous whistleblower, Bradley Manning (now Chelsea Manning). At the time the UN and Human Rights organizations were complaining about her treatment calling her solitary confinement "torture." I was the only officer trained in Prisoner of War training who really saw what was going on. We were taught in training that Solitary Confinement is torture, and here it was happening to an American citizen. Right now, there are over 80,000 people in America in Solitary Confinement, and just recently a Republican congressman referred to solitary confinement, as it was being used against January 6th detainees, he called it "torture."
