Chapter One
One day Little Tommy Turtle was heading home, walking along a dirt path. He had his head down and he was feeling sad.
He had just finished visiting his friend Johnny. Johnny's Dad had been killed in an accident. Johnny and his Mom would be going to live with his Mom's sister, Johnny's Aunt.
"Gee, who would help me if something happened to both of my parents?" thought Tommy. He figured he would ask his Mom about it.
Reaching home, Tommy saw his Mom in the living room, reading the paper. "Mom," called Tommy, "who would help me if something happened to you and Dad?" "Tommy, your Dad and I wrote down on a special paper who would look after you. Our lawyer has that paper. But Dad and I are fine. So, you don't have to worry about it. I'd really rather not talk about it anymore."
Tommy did not feel satisfied with his mother's answer. So, he decided to talk to his friends and ask them for help.
The first friend he went to visit was Billy the Frog. Billy was in the woods near Tommy's house, trying to catch some flies. "Hey Billy," Tommy said, "I have an important question for you. If something happened to my Mom and Dad, would you help take care of me?" "Well, Tommy, I could help teach you frog things to do, like how to hop around," answered Billy. "But turtles don't hop," said Tommy. "Sorry," said Billy, "maybe you could ask another friend." And Billy went on trying to catch more flies.
Tommy then walked over to Sally Skunk's house. Sally was inside, playing with some building blocks. Tommy called from outside, "Sally, can you come out for a minute?" Sally opened the front door and strutted over to Tommy.
"Hi, Tommy, want to come inside and we can build some skyscrapers together?" "Maybe another time, Sally. I came over to ask you an important question."
"Sally, if something happened to my parents, would you help take care of me?" "Well, I could teach you how to spray a smell so nobody will bother you!" said Sally. "Gee, turtles can't do that," reminded Tommy. "Well, maybe you could ask another friend," replied Sally. "See ya," she called, as she headed back inside to play with her blocks.
