About the Author

Julie Solomon, PhD, serves as a Senior Research Associate and the Director of
Training Support at Sociometrics Corporation. As a Senior Research Associate, she has directed R&D, evaluation, and consulting projects in diverse behavioral health areas, including HIV, STI, and teen pregnancy prevention; substance abuse prevention;
violence prevention; and clinician-patient communication in the context of
(patient) communication disorders. These projects have been funded by a variety of public and private entities, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the
David & Lucile Packard Foundation, Johnson & Johnson Corporate Contributions,
the California Healthy Kids Resource Center, and the Santa Clara County (California)
Public Health Department.

As Director of Training Support at Sociometrics,
Dr. Solomon develops and delivers workshops on program planning and evaluation for diverse audiences, principally practitioners in the sexual and reproductive health fields. Dr. Solomon joined Sociometrics in 1999 after completing a PhD in linguistics at Stanford University. While in graduate school, she taught in several departments and also worked for ETR Associates, the American Institutes for Research
(AIR), and the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Research Institute on projects addressing sexual behavior and HIV risk among Latino youth and adults in California.
A common thread that runs through much of Dr. Solomon's work is a desire to empower health and social service providers to carry out appropriate cultural adaptation and successful replication of empirically validated prevention programs.
She has recently published on these topics through the National Campaign to Prevent
Teen Pregnancy and in the journal Evaluation and the Health Professions.

Jacquelin Berman, PhD, MSW is Director of Research, at the New York City Department for the Aging and Adjunct Professor, Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service. Her publications have appeared in the Journal of Gerontological Social Work, and the Journal of Elder Abuse and Neglect; additional publications through the National Institute of Health and New York City Department of Ageing venues; multiple presentations at ASA and GSA. She is a chapter author of two Springer titles, TO GRANDMOTHERS HOUSE WE GO AND STAY (2000), and SERVING MENTALLY ILL OFFENDERS (2002).

Josefina J. Card, PhD, is Founder, President, and CEO of Sociometrics Corporation,
an applied social science research and development (R&D) company based in Los Altos, CA. Dr. Card is a nationally recognized social scientist and an expert in the establishment and operation of research-based social science resources,
products and services. She has served as Principal Investigator of over 70 research-to-
practice R&D projects, most of them funded by the U.S. National Institutes of

Dr. Card has also devoted a significant portion of her career to facilitating the development and scientific evaluation of social intervention programs. She has served as a member of many federal advisory committees,
including the NIH (National Institutes of Health) Study Section for Social Sciences and Population, the NICHD (National Institute on Child Health and Human Development)
Population Research Committee, and the NICHD Advisory Council.

Currently Dr. Card, a native of the Philippines, is working with Pathways
Philippines and with the Ayala Foundation USA to raise funds to allow outstanding graduates of Philippine public high schools to go to college.
