Ο Μένης Κουμανταρέας (Αθήνα, 1931-2014) πρωτοεμφανίστηκε στη λογοτεχνία το 1961, μεταφράζοντας για το περιοδικό "Ο Ταχυδρόμος" πεζά των Hemingway, Joyce και Moravia. Το 1962 εκδόθηκε το πρώτο του βιβλίο, η συλλογή διηγημάτων "Τα μηχανάκια". Βραβεύτηκε για το βιβλίο του "Το αρμένισμα" (Β' Κρατικό βραβείο Διηγήματος, 1967), "Βιοτεχνία υαλικών" (Α' Κρατικό Βραβείο Μυθιστορήματος, 1976), "Η μυρωδιά τους με κάνει να κλαίω" (Α' Κρατικό Βραβείο Μυθιστορήματος, 1997) και "Δυο φορές Έλληνας" (Κρατικό Βραβείο Μυθιστορήματος, 2002). Το 2001 τιμήθηκε με το βραβείο "Blue Book" για το μυθιστόρημα "Ο ωραίος λοχαγός" και το 2008 με το Βραβείο του Ιδρύματος Κώστα και Ελένης Ουράνη της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών για το σύνολο του έργου του.
