About the Author

Carolyn S. Vagts is a wife, mother, grandmother, quilt designer, author, quilt book editor, and the editor of Quilter's World Magazine. She also has a successful quilt shop in Lake Orion, Mich. Carolyn has made a name for herself in the quilting world with her award-winning techniques of mixing traditional piecing with fusible art applique. She especially likes to teach beginning quilt classes, wanting every quilter to have a good first experience with quilting. She also lectures and teaches workshops to guilds. Carolyn's designs have been published regularly in several magazines, including Quilter's World. She has had many designs published in quilting books and has authored two other books before this one. The creative process has been a notable part of her life. She studied drawing, pottery and sculpture in college and received a liberal arts degree. She finally found her niche in quilting when asked to do some design work. That was fifteen years ago, and she has been designing quilts and working in the quilt industry ever since.

2. Sandwich batting between the stitched top and the prepared backing piece; pin or baste layers together to hold. Mark quilting design and quilt as desired by hand or machine.

3. When quilting is complete, remove pins or basting. Trim batting and backing fabric edges even with raw edges of quilt top.

4. If desired, add a flange to the quilt referring to Adding a Flange for instructions and tips.

5. Join binding strips on short ends with diagonal seams to make one long strip; trim seams to ¼" and press seams open.

6. Fold the binding strip in half with wrong sides together along length; press.

7. Sew binding to quilt edges, matching raw edges, mitering corners and overlapping ends.

8. Fold binding to the back side and hand-stitch in place to finish.
