Piecing the Quilt
1. Stitch an A square to a C rectangle to make an A-C unit (Figure 1); press seam to one side. Repeat to make 20 A-C units.
2. Stitch any-color B rectangle to a different-color D rectangle to make a B-D unit (Figure 2); press seam to one side. Repeat to make 20 B-D units.
3. Stitch an A-C unit to a B-D unit referring to Figure 3 for orientation. If possible, select units made with different colors for random color placement. Press seam to one side. Repeat to make a total of 20 blocks.
4. Stitch an E strip between four blocks as shown in Figure 4. Rotate each block within the row as desired. Press seams to one side. Repeat to make five rows.
5. Stitch an F strip between each row as shown in the Assembly Diagram. Press seams toward F strips.
6. Stitch the G/H strips together on the short ends and press. Subcut 2 (3¼" x 51½") G strips and 2 (3¼" x 70½") H strips.
7. Sew G strips to the top and bottom, and H strips to opposite sides to complete the quilt top; press seams toward strips.
Completing the Quilt
1. Press quilt top on both sides; check for proper seam pressing and trim all loose threads.
2. Sandwich batting between the stitched top and the prepared backing piece; pin or baste layers together to hold. Mark quilting design and quilt as desired by hand or machine.
3. When quilting is complete, remove pins or basting. Trim batting and backing fabric edges even with raw edges of quilt top.
4. If desired, add a flange to the quilt referring to Adding a Flange for instructions and tips.
5. Join binding strips on short ends with diagonal seams to make one long strip; trim seams to ¼" and press seams open.
6. Fold the binding strip in half with wrong sides together along length; press.
7. Sew binding to quilt edges, matching raw edges, mitering corners and overlapping ends.
8. Fold binding to the back side and hand-stitch in place to finish.
