Overview

The area of focus was impact of feeding between 10pm-3am on fasting glucose. There was no previous material on the subject prior to this research, from available medical research base.Even anecdotal information is that ,'''if one ate after 10pm, the food will not digest well..'surprisingly even nurses bought this idea, simply because they thought it would increase fasting bood sugar one of the criteria for diagnosing diabetes mellitus.
However this study found out, that Circadian rhythm effects from Astrocyte activity in the SCN[Suprachiasmatic nucleus] causes, Cortisol induced awakening glucose mobilization. It starts either by 3,4or 5am and lasts 1hr.Insulin production, starts 6am and by 1 hr too, enough is produced to counter the hyperglycaemia of cortisol. This study confirmed that if high biological value proteins with low glycaemic index,[e.g turkey or chicken with skin peeled off, boiled groundnut], and antioxidants[ e.g garden egg with edible chlorophyll], is supplied between12am and 3am it reduces this cortisol awakening hyperglycemia better than 1 tablet of 500mg of metformin when the subject awakes by 7-8am.This area has not been investigated before hence this information is useful. The study also confirmed that the skin is the primary site of this awakening cortisol induced glucose mobilization, and that glucose clearance post prandial is faster when high biological value proteisn are part of the diet than when only carbohydrates are eaten as food.
Other highlights of this study include the following:
Widespread body inflammatory changes start as subclinical conditions and exposure to sunlight and hot temperatures with no cooling system increases this to a threshold of clinical features particularky muscle degeneration, weakness, and other organ diseases including pancreatitis which when chronic and unchecked leads to Type 2 Diabetes mellitus.Interleukin 6 with c-reactive proteins,Amyloid A components are just but few of such inflammatory markers in circulation causing such changes. However this also responds to the following:
1.Responds temporarily to anti-oxidants like vitamin c in higher doses of >12x500mg a day dose. Its activity is diminished temporarily, in presence of high doses of antioxidants in the body.
2.Its' level in the body is cumulative as well as rises with more exposure to intense sunlight.
3.It reaches the general as well as tissue circulation, and triggers mitotic activity in one of the cell lines of the skin. Melanocyte or fibroblastic stem cell precursors in the vascular endothelium could be the targets. However this is short-lived for a period of about 7 days during which other body control mechanisms stops this mitotic activity and which if not checked could have led to Tumor genesis or cancer. So it has DNA replicating/oncogene disruption activity.
4.Its effect is also reduced by increasing supply of amino acids via oral ingestion of turkey, chicken, groundnut,[high biological value proteins], by 1am-3am.
5.It is an immune complex factor product, with influence on the nervous system.
6.Pure carbohydrate meals like jollof rice without chicken or fish or turkey or meat, takes about 21/2 hrs to 3 hrs to clear from circulation while if the above proteins were to be added clearance of same amount of jollof rice happen 11/2 to 2hrs post cibum. This simply means that proteins of high biological value are important in sugar metabolism.
7.Under airconditioned room temperatures, feeling of hunger was less with less blood glucose when compared with a higher blood glucose and more hunger feeling under sunlight. Usually feeling of hunger happens when brain blood glucose drops by 10%, so even when this happens in air-condition temp, it is less intense and likely when compared to higher brain blood glucose in sunlight eliciting hunger.Heat and exposure to Sunlight are an important element in glucose metabolism.
