Understanding Your Child's Behavior and Development: A Parent's Guide to Milestones, Challenges, and Complex Conditions
This book is a comprehensive, parent-friendly guide to the milestones, challenges, and conditions that shape a child's growth from infancy through adolescence. Blending medical expertise with compassionate parenting advice, the authors help readers understand what's typical, what might be cause for concern, and what they can do to foster resilience and emotional well-being at home.

Whether you're facing speech delays, sleep disruptions, or more complex diagnoses like autism, ADHD, or genetic syndromes, this book gives you the confidence to act early and wisely. It covers how to track developmental milestones, navigate healthcare systems, access interventions, and practice self-care—offering insight not just into your child's behavior, but also your own mental health as a parent.

Unlike most parenting books that focus narrowly on either everyday discipline or clinical conditions, this book does both—offering actionable guidance for parents of children with and without diagnoses. With over 65 chapters spanning neurodevelopment, emotional health, environmental risks, and special populations like preterm or adopted children, this essential guide offers clarity and comfort for anyone raising a child in today's complex world.

WORDS OF PRAISE

[This book] doesn't just explain emotional, cognitive, and social development--it brings each stage of a child's growth to life in a way that feels both insightful and compassionate.
--Nohra E. Ghaoui, MD, Pediatric Dermatology Fellow, Department of Dermatology, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center

As a mother of soon to be 21-year-old twin boys, I wish this book had been available for me to read during their upbringing.... I would recommend this book as the perfect baby shower gift! And of course, for all parents and caregivers throughout a child's growth.
--Penne Lentz

Dr. Simon and Dr. Sabharwal provide a wealth of practical advice... It covers a broad range of topics and explains to parents the way a doctor would likely diagnose and choose to treat.
--Heidi Almeter, Pharm.D.

[R]egardless of developmental stage or cognitive functioning, [children] will thrive in an environment that provides support and consistent expectations. [This book] encourages parents to realize that there is not a "right" or "wrong" way to approach caregiving!...I enjoyed reading this book and am excited for it to be available as a reference to other clinicians and caregivers.
