The tragedy of the Donner Party is a well-known event in the history of the West. The story of the California-bound settlers who became trapped in the snows of the Sierra Nevadas and were reduced to cannibalism before being rescued has been recounted in Charles F. McGlashan's classic History of the Donner Party, originally published in 1879. Subsequent publications have, to some degree, relied on survivors' accounts, most recently George Stewart's Ordeal by Hunger (1971) and Virginia Reed Murphy's Across the Plains in the Donner Party (Vista, 1995). In the present work, Johnson, a Salt Lake City community college librarian and author of articles on Western trails, provides the most complete collection available of published narratives on the events surrounding the ill-fated trek. She includes not only accounts of those on the journey but of those they encountered. This thorough collection of primary material makes fascinating reading.
