About the Author

Dr. Terriann Crisp has served as an academic pharmacologist for almost 30 years. She earned her Ph.D. from Marshall University School of Medicine in 1985 prior to completing a postdoctoral research fellowship at Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center. Dr. Crisp worked through the academic ranks at Northeast Ohio Medical University College of Medicine and later at Des Moines University as Professor and Chair of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. She has served as a question writer and reviewer for the medical licensing boards and has provided Step-1 Medical Pharmacology Board Review courses with Kaplan Medical and more recently with Becker™ Professional Education. CRISP ENTERPRISES: PHARMACOLOGY INSTRUCTION AND CONSULTATION, LLC in 2011 which has allowed her to broaden her pharmacological instruction on a broader national and international scale.

Description: These flashcards are designed to aid students in preparation for the USMLE Step 1 certification examination.
Purpose: The author has divided pharmacology into five major areas and presents high-yield information in a flashcard format. She has succeeded in reviewing important information required for passing the pharmacology-related questions on the Step 1 examination, but the format is less uniform than that found on the many flashcards available to review pharmacology for Step 1.
Audience: These flashcards emphasize the information that medical students need to master for the Step 1 examination, but they would be useful for healthcare professionals who must master pharmacology in their curriculum or their certification examinations.
Features: The cards focus on five major areas of pharmacology, namely autonomics, cardiovascular, neuropharmacology, antibiotics, and pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles. The emphasis is on mechanism of action, clinical indications, and major adverse reactions and toxicities of key drugs. These five areas do reflect areas of emphasis on Step 1, but many other areas that appear on Step 1 are not covered, such as endocrine and autacoid pharmacology, cancer chemotherapy drugs, antiviral drugs, etc. Purchase of the flashcards also gives students access to narrated PowerPoint lectures available at www.langetextbooks.com/crisp.
Assessment: For the most part, this work reflects taking lecture notes from a traditional pharmacology course, including many of the excellent figures found in Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, 12th edition, Katzung et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2012), and editing them into a series of cards that cover high-yield information that students need to master to pass the pharmacology-related questions of the Step 1 USMLE certification examination. Fortunately, students have available many different study aids, including many different sets of flashcards, to help in the mastery of pharmacology. These flash cards will be well liked by some students, particularly those who rely heavily upon lectures to master the basic sciences in the medical curriculum.
