Description: The manual covering all of the parasites infecting and infesting common domestic and wildlife species is divided into sections by the host species. A summary of information for each parasite includes its importance, life cycle, method of diagnosis, and treatment as well as each parasite and its diagnostic stages' size and dimension accompanied by a helpful photograph. Since the last edition in 1997, Dr. Foreyt has added sections on laboratory animal and human parasites.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide access to pragmatic reference information in veterinary parasitology. This objective is worthy and the author has again provided an excellent yet concise laboratory manual for everyday, routine parasitology. This manual, although quite similar to previous editions, has been improved by the inclusion of laboratory animal and human parasites.
Audience: The manual is targeted to practitioners, technicians, and veterinary students. The author has provided the perfect format to enable busy practitioners to glean information quickly and easily.
Features: Concise, pertinent information is provided for each parasite. Also, extremely helpful parasite photographs of diagnostic stages and approximate sizes are prominent throughout. In addition, tables covering zoonotic diseases and antiparasitic drugs can be found in each section. Finally, an extensive bibliography is included if the reader needs more in-depth information.
Assessment: This quality publication is needed by practitioners, veterinary technicians, and students. It is essential for anyone performing diagnostic parasitology. Although this edition is similar to previous editions, the author has added useful information and taken great care to include updated references when appropriate. I recommend this manual to anyone in veterinary medicine who does not already own a previous edition. Also, I highly recommend this edition to diagnostic laboratories for the valuable information on diagnosis of laboratory animal and human parasites.
