A great story about a penguin and a polar bear.  The illustrations are attractive and tell the story well.  It prompts my children to read along. The author/illustrator conveyed her ability to be an excellent advocate for childrens literature.  Hope she continues many more childrens books!   Lisa from FL

What a great story!  Anyone who has a four year old can attest to the fact that social graces and the ability to make and keep friends is a skill that often needs to be learned.  Virgil & Owen illustrates this notion in the most charming and entertaining way imaginable!  Both my 4 year old son and almost 17-month old daughter love this book.  The words and illustrations clearly resonate with them - we read it no fewer than 3 times in a row each and every time!  LOVE!

"Virgil and Owen" by Paulette Bogan is a delightful story about friendship between "polar opposites."

Sharing is a tough concept for all people, not just children! Virgil and Owen has a great message in the story and one that children can relate to and learn from. My children love the colorful illustrations and the expressions on the faces of all of the characters from cover to cover. I love when my son examines each page and comments on what each character must be feeling based on their face and body language. Great book, great lesson and the moral is something to remember for all ages!

Virgil and Owen is the story of a Penguin named Virgil who befriends a Polar Bear named Owen. Virgil wants Owen to be his friend and his friend only. He becomes very upset when Owen begins having fun with other animals. Virgil shows sadness, anger and jealousy as Owen wants to be friends with other animals too, as well as with Virgil. Owen doesn't even know that Virgil is upset. This story resonates so very true with all of us, especially children as they are just beginning to find out who they are and where they fit in. I believe it is a wonderful teaching tool for children. Everyone can be friends. We do not "own" other people. After Owen's escapades with various animals and Virgil's frustration, ironically Owen is the one who lovingly asks Virgil to play with him and the other animals, which seems to be a new concept for Virgil. This story reminds me of when I was a child. I too related to the Virgil character as at times only wanted a friend to myself. It may have been because of low self esteem and not yet understanding that we all need one another. I believe we all have/had a bit of Virgil in us at one time or another.Paulette Bogan writes with such heart and authenticity. Her story is such a simple life lesson told with lovable, beautifully illustrated characters that children of all ages will relate to. The moral of this wonderful book is how we need not be jealous or feel we have to keep people to ourselves or they cannot have other friends......".there is room on the playground for everyone". I love how this author writes. Her story reminds me of the true virtues we seem to lose as we grow older. I highly recommend this book for all children. I know that as a parent reads this to a young child, they too will be touched and reminded of the blessing of friendship. Enjoy reading Virgil & Owen! It's a keeper. Cathy Carpinello

I love all of Paulette Bogan's books, but this one is a new favorite! The spare text and adorable illustrations made it an instant hit with my four-year-old, and the message of friendship is sweet and easily understandable for young children. As a second grade teacher, I often use Paulette Bogan's books for read-alouds. The illustrations are clever and funny, and all of her stories are relatable and humorous. This new edition to our classroom library was eagerly shared over and over by my 2nd graders. Virgil and Owen are lovable characters and they will be just as well-loved as Spike and Lulu for years to come!

Virgil & Owen- Sweet as can be! I gave my nephew this book for his birthday and he absolutely loves it! The illustrations are so fun and there's always a sweet underlying lesson that kids can relate to. My nephew likes to repeat some of the words when they read the story. What a wonderful treat it was to see him and his baby brother so engaged!!

Sometimes you just want a best friend ALL TO YOURSELF!  Virgil is that guy, they guy who can't even THINK of sharing  his new buddy Owen.  Like all Paulette Bogan's books, there is a story to be told, a lesson to be learned.  The plot is precious  and the vibrant illustrations are captivating for kids, young and old alike....If I ever decide to grow up, I will still read it!

Virgil & Owen is a wonderful tale about the challenges of sharing a best friend. Virgil the Penguin has found a polar bear and wants to keep his new friend all to himself. When Virgil learns that his new friend's name is Owen and that he wants to play with the other Artic animals, Virgil loses it...but not for long. Virgil soon learns the valuable lesson of sharing and gains a lot more than just Owen's friendship in the end. The illustrations and story keep the reader engaged! Children of many different ages can relate to and connect with the challenges Virgil and Owen faced in their developing friendship. As an educator, I can see this book being used as a wonderful resource to teach to community building and conflict resolution. Do yourself, your child, and your student a favor and read Virgil & Owen! These lovable characters will soon become two of your favorite literary friends!

I adore these two characters-especially Virgil who gruffly claims Owen as his polar bear without even asking his name! Owen shows how to be a friend and invites Virgil in on the fun. Such a cute book on friendship!
