This guide to more than 100 nineteenth- and twentieth-century wars was inspired by an earlier work, "Wars & Peace Treaties, 1815 to 1914" by Arthur Ponsonby (George Allen & Unwin, 1918). This current work basically follows the same format. Author Goldstein, professor of international history at the University of Birmingham, also begins his coverage after the fall of Napoleon (1816) but continues through the Gulf War of 1991. He provides brief but thorough accounts of both military and political actions. Each entry identifies the belligerents, the background causes of the war, the occasion for the outbreak of hostilities, the major military developments, and the treaties and ensuing political results. Most entries are one to two pages in length Goldstein divides the entries into 18 sections determined by geographic locale, such as "Wars of German Unification," "Central Asian Wars," and "Struggle for the Horn of Africa." Individual wars are then presented in chronological order. One entire chapter is devoted to "World Wars and Related Conflicts" and considers individually the various fronts of the First World War, the wars at sea, the Polish-Soviet War of 1920, the Greco-Turkish War of 1920-22, and nine separate conflicts of the Second World War, such as the Russo-Finnish War and the Sino-Soviet War. Related appendixes provide a chronological list of participating countries and their date of entry into each war and an alphabetical country-by-country listing of declarations of war. Three other appendixes list post-Second World War peace treaties, United Nations peacekeeping operations, and major arms-control agreements. Nineteen maps accompany the text, and a detailed bibliography and index complete the book Entries in this book are more detailed than those found in Kohn's "Dictionary of Wars" (Facts On File, 1986). Goldstein also provides more information on terms and treaties. This book will be a useful addition to history, political science, and military history collections.
