Overview

Wasim wants to be a One Star swimmer. But when the day comes to take the plunge, Wasim's up to his neck in trouble before even dipping a toe in the pool. Swimming instructor Carol orders him out of the pool area for talking, and he was only trying to help the new boy, Wayne. Now Wasim will have to wait a whole term before he can try for his One Star again. Upset, Wasim watches from the sidelines but he finds himself in the right place at the right time when terrible danger looms for one of his classmates…

About the Author

Chris Ashley, the son of children's book writer Bernard Ashley, was born in south-east London and his childhood was dominated by sport and children's books. He trained as a teacher and began writing in the 1980s. He is the head teacher of a school in Bury.Kate Pankhurst graduated from the University of Central Lancashire with a degree in illustration. She was the highest placed graduate in a national student competition, The Macmillan Prize for Children's Book Illustration in 2002. Since then she has illustrated several books including Captain Pike Looks After the Baby by Marjorie Newman and Who's a Cheeky Baby? by Ian Whybrow. She has also illustrated Wasim One Star and Wasim the Wanderer for Frances Lincoln Publishers. Having completed her Masters in Children's Book illustration, Kate also lectures part-time at UCLan. She currently lives in Leeds.
Bernard Ashley is a former head teacher who is now writing full-time. He lives in South London where he was born. Bernard's impressive list of titles reflects 35 years of writing realistic fiction – from picture books right up to teenage novels. Several of Bernard's books have been successfully televised and he has frequently appeared on prize lists – his Little Soldier was short-listed for the Guardian Prize in 2000. In addition to his other activities Bernard Ashley also advises internationally on matters concerned with literacy. He is also a very popular visitor to schools.
