James Arthur Kjelgaard (1910-1959) was an American writer of books for young readers, particularly about dogs and wild animals, often with a western theme. Kjelgaard was the author of more than forty novels, the most famous of which is BIG RED, a bestseller that was made into a 1962 Walt Disney film.
