About the Author

History was always my favorite subject. I was 2 months shy of my 7th birthday when World War II began with the United States becoming involved. I remember the troop trains, the ladies no longer being able to purchase the silk stockings as they were being used to make parachutes the troops would need. I remember the ration books we had to use to purchase gas and other necessary items. I remember the "butter" not being butter but lard but to make it look more like butter we put in yellow coloring. Being brought up on a farm, my father either donated or sold cows, pigs, an occasional horse, and some chickens to the military. This book took me some time research locating my brother-in-law's tank battalion's history and other tank survivors and relatives those who died. I am a Women's Army Corps veteran (Korean Conflict) having taken Basic Training at Fort Lee, Virginia and my base afterwards was Fort McClellan, Alabama, both of which are now closed. At age 71 I was honored to go on the Ride for the Wall from Magalia, California to Washington, D.C. in honor of all veterans but especially the Vietnam vets as many of them did not get a welcome home. I'd make the trip again in a heartbeat as it was wonderful, inspiring, met lots of interesting people along the way, ex-military men and women, if there is such a thing as "ex-military," because what one learns in basic, one never forgets, and seeing some of this wonderful country. This is an excellent source of some of our military history and great for history buffs. You have to read this book! Thank you and God Bless America. B. J. Bryan
