Chapter One

Dr. Healer came out of his bedroom ready to leave for his clinic. He asked his wife, "Honey, where is my stethoscope?"

"I don't know dear, it must be on the dressing table," she replied.

"No, I cannot find it!" insisted Dr. Healer.

Dr. Healer heard someone whispering in John's room. He opened the door and was surprised to see his four year old son, John with his stethoscope around his neck.

"What are you doing John? I was looking for my stethoscope," said Dr. Healer with a large smile.

"I am Dr. John Healer, Daddy, and Amanda is one of my patients," said John.

"A stethoscope is a very important toy for doctors and nurses. You can hear the sound of the heart, lungs, and tummy with this instrument," Dr. Healer said to his son. "Now, put the long arms of the stethoscope into your ears and put the round drum on my chest and I will hold it for you."

"Do you hear a noise that sounds like thump, thump, thump?" asked his father.

"Yes! It sounds like someone is beating a drum!" exclaimed John.

"This is the sound of the heart. It is an amazing organ which takes old blood from your veins, sends it to the lungs for cleaning and then pumps this new, clean blood to the rest of the body," Dr. Healer explained to his son.

"Now I want to hear my daddy's heart!" said Amanda as she took the stethoscope from her brother. "I can also hear a thump, thump, thump!" said Amanda with a big smile.

Dr. Healer now showed John how to listen to the lungs. He asked John to put the round part of the stethoscope on Amanda's back

Dr. Healer asked, "Do you hear the sound of breathing?"

"Yes Daddy," replied John, "It sounds different than thump, thump, thump. It sounds like the wind!"

"Yes dear, these are the lungs. They expand like a balloon when you breathe in and shrink when you breathe out," said Dr. Healer.

Amanda left the room and came back with her big doll. She asked her father, "Can you check her heart?"

Dr. Healer laughed and hugged her with love for her innocence. He explained to his daughter, "You cannot listen to the doll's heart because it is not a living thing."

"But Daddy, she rolls her eyes and talks!" said Amanda.

"I know sweetheart, but it does not have a living body like us," said her father.
