There were parts I loved and parts I hated.

As much as I absolutely adore Karina Halle's writing, Where Sea Meets Sky was a little too new-adult for me. Yes, I realize that "new-adult" is pretty much the first description in the book synopsis but I rarely read synopses anymore. I like to be surprised these days, so just know my mediocre response to this novel is totally my fault. One aspect of this book I really did like though was the courage these characters had to risk it all for a new experience. Not drugs or promiscuity, but packing up the few possessions you have and setting up shop in another country. Getting out of your comfort zone and following your heart. “Take this opportunity … and find what makes you happy. You may never get that chance again. Time waits for no one.” Does this always work out in nonfiction scenarios? Hell no! I mean, have you ever watched Locked Up Abroad?? But it was a nice thought :) If you like the new-adult genre then you will likely love this book. Karina Halle is amazing! My favorite quote: “Let it be wild, let it be messy. It’s the first sunrise of many more to come. You can’t screw it up. If you do, there’s always tomorrow.”

Very real. Very beautiful. My only downfall was the very ending, but its still great! Going to read the 3rd book now.

4 memorable, adventurous, road trip stars! Where Sea Meets Sky, by Karina Halle, was such a wonderful reading escape! The first series I ever read from this author was The Artist Trilogy. WSMS is totally different from that series. It equally packed with intense moments, the writing style is once again phenomenal and the characters are simply amazing! Gemma an Josh meet at an Halloween party in Vancouver, which is Josh’s hometown. After an unforgettable one-night stand, Gemma leaves to go back to New Zealand and Josh just can’t stop thinking about her. The time that they spent together might have been short, but the impact that she made was big. Josh takes a major decision that will change his life; he drops everything and travels to New Zealand. When he finds Gemma, she’s already seeing someone. Josh won’t let that stop him from experiencing the best moments of his life. As days go by, memories are made and the bond between them grows stronger. Will Josh be able to hold on to Gemma or will he just be another visitor in her life? After reading this book, I definitely want to visit New Zealand. There is so many interesting places to see! The author did such an amazing job at describing each and every one of the places they visited. I felt like I was tagging along with them on this unforgettable journey. Karina Halle’s writing style exquisite. Each new places that they visited brought Gemma and Josh closer together. I loved the way they slowly feel for each other. Their is no denying the chemistry between them. It was present every time they were in the same room. Josh was my favorite character in this book. I connected with him from the very beginning. I loved to see him grow as a character and make life changing decisions. He was determined to find the courage to do things that would make him step out of his comfort zone. I have to admit that I loved the chemistry between Gemma and Josh, but I had a hard time connecting with Gemma. I just could not understand her sometimes. That did not take anything away from the story though. I really liked it and it was a memorable reading escape. This journey was filled with emotional, intense, wild and interesting moments. Gemma and Josh learned a lot from each other. Gemma might have made a big impact on Josh’s life, but Josh totally stole the spotlight in Gemma’s life. His love for her was so powerful that even if her life journey would not have turned out the way that it did, there was no way she was ever going to forget about Josh. I give, Where Sea Meets Sky, by Karina Halle, 4 memorable, adventurous, road trip stars!

I pride myself on not judging books by their covers, and yes I know being prideful is a sin, but this cover is one of the most beautiful ones I've ever seen.  It's easy to look at it and see how appealing it is, but I was only fully able to appreciate it after I finished reading the book. I will say this, it's almost like it was stolen from the pages of the story. And what a story.   Gemma and Josh's initial meeting was hot and filled with potential and I hated seeing them part.  That positive vibe quickly  shifted when Josh showed up in New Zealand.  I did think he was slightly crazy for chasing a one night stand, but as it turned out doing so was the best thing he could've possibly done.  I liked Josh.  He may have seemed lost in Vancouver, with a job he didn't like, a mother he loved but didn't like, but he wasn't without virtue; he was kind, patient, understanding, and kept trying to get Gemma to open up to him.  Gemma was wonderful too, even though I thought she made some bad choices, I could understand and relate to the fears that led her to making them.  I loved how strong Gemma was, not only physically, but mentally.  The chemistry the two of them had me turning pages quickly and mentally yelling at them, "Get it together!" Besides the gorgeous cover, I loved the setting of this story.  In fact, I can say it's probably the third most important character in this book after Gemma and Josh.  I've always pictured New Zealand as being wondrous and an adventure, but I had no idea how breath taking it could by just reading about it.  Karina Halle uses such evocative descriptions it was very easy to see the beaches and glow worms in the caverns.  I've always had New Zealand on my list of countries to visit, but this book makes me want to get up and go right now! I really wasn't paying much attention to the page count as I read, but it was all about the journey Josh, Gemma, and their other fellow trekkers were on.  I absolutely adore how Karina didn't use the usual template some romance authors use.  The template I'm referring to is intercourse at around the half point of the book.  The story might start with a one night stand, but everything after that was an almost torturous slow burn, and I loved it! I honestly feel like every book I read by Karina Halle is better and different than her last.  Whether she's writing a darker style book, or something contemporary and lighter, she manages to infuse this gravitas that resonates with me and I think with readers everywhere.  I can't wait to see how she surprises me with her next book.

Oh man. I have the absolute worst case of wanderlust after finishing this book. It's bad enough that this one is set in New Zealand, where I have been dying to visit ever since the first Lord of the Rings movie came out. To actually take a road trip with Halle's characters only ignited my need to go even more. I even found myself stopping to pull up the different places Josh and Gemma visit on my phone! I WILL make it to NZ someday and I am definitely using this book as guide to check out several places! (Especially Cape Reigna!) The traveling aspect was absolutely my favorite part of this book. I did enjoy Gemma and Josh's romance, but I found myself a bit frustrated with some of the characters' actions and decisions. This is very much a character driven novel, which I love, so watching Gemma and Josh figure out their direction was definitely worth the angst and longing. I wasn't sure I would emotionally connect with these characters, but some of the things they said resonated a little close to home, so I did end up understanding them on a deeper level. "I think I ache for things I may never have. I long for purpose, for life, and yet sometimes I think I'm too afraid to live." Gemma and Josh first meet at a Halloween party and end up sharing one night together, before Gemma heads back home to New Zealand. The two are certainly not lacking in the passion department and Gemma's leaving is definitely bittersweet. Josh ends up applying and getting accepted to art school, so he decides to live his life to the fullest until then, and embarks on a journey to New Zealand. Sure, Gemma is one of the reasons for his destination, as he can't get the woman out of his head. However, I don't think he goes there solely for her. He is trying to fill the void in his life, seek out his purpose. Sure, Gemma is a perk and he wouldn't mind finding the woman that he can't get out of his head, but finding her isn't the explosive reunion he thought. This is where my frustration with Gemma came in. She is dating a guy named Nick who is a complete possessive jerk and all I could think was 'WHY?!' It's nice to see the role reversal here though. Instead of the guy being the emotionally unavailable one, it's the female. Gemma is the one who has her own issues to work through and maintains her distance from Josh. They embark on the most awkward road trip in history- Gemma, Josh, Gemma's 'boyfriend' Nick, and her cousin, Amber. Sharing a VW van, the four set out to experience New Zealand. Gemma is with Nick for a good portion of the trip and they don't exactly keep it secret that they're together, if you know what I mean. I felt for Josh, as he really likes her and has to endure knowing she's physically with another man. Amber is cute and single, but Josh really only has eyes for Gemma. There is one instant that something occurs between them and when Gemma finds out she's upset and hurt and I just wanted to yell at her for being a hypocrite. Josh calls her on it though so good for him! Still, Josh should have put a stop to her advances with a quickness, especially knowing his feelings for Gemma. "Sometimes I think I'm just a shell of who I used to be and I don't think I'll ever feel whole." While Gemma and Josh's relationship start off with an explosive one night stand, theirs is actually a slow burn relationship, primarily because Gemma is involved with someone else (but thankfully no cheating ensues) and she isn't ready to make that jump with Josh. He knows she will break his heart but he can't help but wear it on his sleeve for her anyway. She is so fragile in certain instances and I really felt for her. She has known pain and loss in her life and now she doesn't feel she can ever be the girl she once was- the girl who was so full of life and loved to paint. This is definitely a book of self-recovery and I loved that. Josh and Gemma help the other find purpose and meaning in their lives and it isn't an easy road to traverse, but the outcome is so worth it. "Gemma." His voice is rough and heated. "Some people may expect nothing. Most people expect something. But you, you should expect everything."¿

I was so excited to read WSMS!!! I loved getting to know Josh Miles, Vera's younger brother from Love, In English. He is a passionate and lovable male character and once again Karina Halle writes a fantastic male POV. It was fascinating to be inside his head and get to live his journey. Although, I didn't always love Gemma throughout this book, I could understand the reason behind her actions. And New Zealand...WOW...I could say that New Zealand was the biggest and most beloved character for me in this book. I absolutely fell in love with the places described in WSMS. Karina Halle has a way of transporting you to the places that her books are set in. I always want to visit those places after reading her books. This book was no exception. I'm ready to head to New Zealand! 5 huge stars!

It is no secret that Karina Halle is one of my favorite authors. She is one of my go to authors and I never miss a book. She is known for her edgy characters, her graphic descriptions that bring her stories to life, her unique plots, perfect sense of timing & delivery, adrenalized action scenes, and red hot romance. Her characters and their stories come to life and jump off the pages. Each and every novel is fresh and unpredictable. The reader lives and breaths the story right along with the characters. It is an incredible gift for a writer to evoke this kind of reading experience. The reader always walks away from a Karina Halle novel with a sense of overwhelming satisfaction. My expectations for Where Sea Meets Sky were very high. I was anxious to see how Karina would deliver a New Adult genre novel when she was well known for romantic suspense and paranormal/ horror romance. I may have set my expectations and hopes too low. Where Sea Meets Sky blew me away. It is Karina's best writing to date. She reached deep within herself and tapped into an emotional vault that had me floored. She took two ordinary people that had very ordinary issues that they would face at their age and made their story epic. I think every reader will be able to identify with each of these characters on some level that makes it very personal. We have all reached that path in the road where we question what we are doing with our lives. Is this direction we want to go or is there something else? We have questioned our choices, reflected on our actions, changed our dreams, and struggled along the way. There comes a point where we have to stop the path we are on and look for something different. We have to face our realities, dig deep for our true desires, and then have the courage to change. This is something that every person will experience. It is a natural part of life. It is the one gift as humans that we have. We have the power of choice. We have the opportunity to learn from mistakes. We have the power to change. We have the power to grow mentally and emotionally. This is where Joshua Miles and Gemma Henare's story begins. An accidental meeting and one night hook up will lead both of these people down a new road in life. Gemma has been touring the United States and Canada, living moment to moment, searching for the next path to take in her life. She meets Joshua the night before she is going home to New Zealand. Even though they have an incredible night together they both accept the reality of their meeting. For Joshua it is the moment that makes him start to take inventory of his life. He admires Gemma's bravery to step outside of her life and do something that is just for her. He has never done that. He has always just muddled along and accepted what came his way. He never reached out for something he wanted or had the courage to change the life he was living. This meeting was the kick start to Josh's road of self discovery. He quits his job, drains his savings account, buys a plane ticket, and heads for New Zealand. He isn't really looking for Gemma, he is looking for himself. He knows this trip is going to be the defining factor that changes his life. When Gemma returned to New Zealand she fell into the same rut she was in before she left. She didn't allow her new experiences to shape and mold her into something different. She doesn't have the guts to let go of the familiar and grab onto something new. Part of it is her self esteem and the other is the fear of the unknown. When she runs into the sexy Canadian she spent her last night abroad with, a yearning is kick started once again. But what exactly is she yearning? A road trip through New Zealand in an old VW bus with Josh, her American cousin, Amber, and convient boyfriend Nick will be an adventure of a lifetime and eye opening experience for them all. They will discover their true colors. They will tap into hidden dreams and desires. They will get to know the people that they are. And they will get to experience the natural and beauty of New Zealand. At the end of the trip, each of these people will be affected in some way. For some it will be life changing, for others it will be the stepping stone, and for some it will be clarification. I will say that Where Sea Meets Sky is a passionate love story. Although there is a bit of a love triangle, it does not have a sense of betrayal or cheating. It is a discovery of the heart. Karina's writing was phenomenal. I felt like I was in the VW bus right along with all the characters. I experienced the beauty of New Zealand in my mind. The emotional journey that this book took touched my soul. I could easily empathize with the characters. I felt the passion and sense of wonder at discovering what true love really is. I laughed, cried , and fretted right along with Josh and Gemma. I sympathized with Amber's plight. Where Sea Meets Sky was a rich reading experience. I highly recommend this book. I am looking forward to Amber's next fork in the road. Racing The Sun is Amber's story. It will release on July 28, 2015.
