Northern Nights Series #1

Can you trust your instincts, when they have betrayed you in the past?

After leaving her abusive husband, PhD student Litza York is looking forward to a change of scenery. A year in a remote village in eastern Finland, researching the rare Saimaa seal is just what she needs.

Meeting handsome park ranger Niilo Vuorikoski comes both as a welcome surprise and a challenge: How can she trust her instincts, when they have utterly failed her in the past?

But her emotional struggle gets overshadowed by a more immediate concern, when someone starts poisoning the object of her study, bringing her favourite animal to the verge of extinction.

Both issues reach boiling point when Litza pursues a terrible suspicion, and finds herself in mortal danger…

Romantic suspense meets cozy crime in Finland's lonely countryside.

White Nights is a cross between romantic suspense and cozy mystery, and honestly, it leans a little more toward cozy mystery for my tastes. Nevertheless, the story is interesting, and easily read in one sitting. I liked both Niilo and Litza, and it was easy to see them as friends. I would've liked a bit more on the romance side as that seems to move rather fast, and I didn't really get a feel for them as a couple. Litza has some past trauma to work through, which is easy enough to figure out even before it's explained, and Niilo is just an all-around sweetheart, plus we get a few more fun characters and a small town that I hope to see more of in the next book. In the end, the story is certainly worth the read, and the town should make for an interesting location for the series.

Reviewed by Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers' Favorite Putting a brutal marriage behind her, Litza accepts a scholarship in Finland to study the Saimaa seals, one of the most endangered species on earth. After suffering an abusive relationship, the last thing she’s looking for is romance. The rugged and almost magical beauty of the landscape, and the rather debonair, rugged Linnansaari National Park ranger, lure Litza’s emotions, opening her heart to new adventures. But there is danger in the air, as someone wants the Saimaa seals destroyed and is making nightly visits to the lakes, leaving behind poisoned fish as bait. The man is armed and dangerous and no one knows who he is. Suspicions are high and everyone is suspect. With a little bit of mystery and a whole lot of romance, Jenna van Berke’s White Nights: Northern Nights Series is a comfortable read. The plot thickens as Litza quickly makes friends in the tiny Finnish community. Most of the people she meets speak English, which facilitates her ability to communicate. Everyone is worried about the fate of the Saimma seals and even more so once it becomes evident that someone is feeding the seals poisoned fish in an attempt to annihilate the population. The save-the-endangered species theme is an important aspect of the plot, especially when the mysterious person interferes with their existence. The characters are reasonably well developed and the scenery and setting are well described. The heightened tension as the climax is reached adds a bit of intrigue, as no one is sure whom to trust anymore. There are more books to follow in this series, which will add greater dimension and excitement to the growing interest between Litza and Niilo, the fascinating park ranger. An interesting read.
