CHAPTER 1
It is a balmy night. A soft breeze is whistling through the woodland trees. The yellow moon glows brightly, casting shadows across the flower-filled garden. The only sounds heard are the night creatures lifting their voices to sing in perfect harmony along with the whisper of the soft wind. A shrill, eerie sound is heard from the screech owl high in one of the nearby weeping willow trees. All is peaceful at the Little Pink House.
The stars, like tiny diamonds, twinkle high above the Little Pink House. The woodland trees stand at attention like soldiers protecting everything around them. Their branches hover over the tiny roof keeping those inside the Little Pink House safe and secure.
Looking through the open window, one can see a large, pleasant room with a sofa and a chair, and lots of books in bookcases along the wall. A wide open fireplace sees through into another room. Vases of flowers can be seen on the two tables on either side of the sofa. There is a homey glow to the room in the Little Pink House. All is calm.
As the night shadows slowly slip across this candlelit room in the Little Pink House, a rustling is heard. Who could it be? Is there a mouse scurrying about in the room? Is Henry, the cat, getting into mischief? A murmur of soft voices is heard in the room. Who could it be?
Soft voices could be heard calling out to one another. The candlelight flickers on each face. The family is stirring.
A beautiful, soft voice is heard.
"Hi Sylvie," the little, bubbly voice sings out.
"Oh, hello Stella," an unhappy voice answers.
Something is happening in the Little Pink House. Now everyone in the Little Pink House has lived there for a long time and each one is very content. They know each other very well. Every face turns to look at Sylvie.
"Why so sad?" Sandy shouts from across the room.
"Shhh!" sounds a chorus of voices.
It seems the entire family is awake. Can you guess who this family could be in the Little Pink House?
The voices heard are from the Doll family living in the Little Pink House.
Each of these dolls is different from one another. Stella, the oldest, watches over all the other dolls. She is tall with long, golden curls and blue eyes. Her cheeks are rosy and she has a smile on her face making her look very happy. Her floor length lace dress and lace tiara make her look like a princess. She is standing by three smaller dolls looking at her as she watches over them. But Stella is worried about Sylvie. She wonders why Sylvie is so upset. What has happened to our once cheerful Sylvie? She tries to comfort her.
"Sylvie, you are very unhappy. Tell us what is making you sad."
Sylvie, who looks so pretty in a pink silk dress and a crown of pink roses on her dark hair, tries to explain why she is sad. Standing all alone across the room she looks at Stella.
"I'm okay, Stella," cries Sylvie. "It's just that tomorrow, some new dolls, different from us, will be moving into our Little Pink House. This makes me unhappy."
"We will wait until tomorrow to meet the new dolls," replies Stella. "Each of us is different, and we are a family. I am sure all will be well. Wait until tomorrow. You'll see, Sylvie."
The dolls know the Lady in charge of the Little Pink House likes dolls very much. She has carefully chosen each one of them because each is different. When the Lady's friends come to visit, they are always looking at and holding the dolls. The friends like fussing with the dolls' dresses and combing their hair and arranging different hats on each doll. This makes the Doll family very happy.
Sandy, dressed in her blue sailor dress with a white kerchief around her neck, her hair in two pigtails, looks thoughtfully through her new eyeglasses, given to her that very morning by the Lady in the Little Pink House. She has a great idea.
"We should have a welcoming party when the new dolls arrive," she offers.
