Wieder is a widely published poet and, perhaps most notably, the editor of a splendid pair of anthologies: Chapters into Verse: Poetry in English Inspired by the Bible and The Poet's Book of Poems: The Complete Psalter as Rendered by Twenty-Five Poets from the Sixteenth to the Twentieth Centuries. Words to God's Music is advertised as only the third full poetical version of the Book of Psalms (after Mary and Philip Sydney's and Christopher Smart's), but this is not quite accurate. Wieder's book touches on the Songs of David at many points but is a new collection, almost a jazz variation on the originals. His 23rd Psalm, for example, begins, "I want no shepherd when I lie/ Down, don't need to be led to water, shade/ Or rest." Still, there is much of merit and interest here, and Wieder is always worth reading. For most collections. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
