Description: This is the fifth edition of a practical, softcover workbook for trainees in neonatology. Not intended as a comprehensive textbook, it provides up-to-date information in a casebook format in 22 common areas of neonatal care.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an interactive approach to education in the area of neonatal care. The scenarios are true to life and challenge readers with a question-and-answer format. This concept of active learning is fun and achieves the objectives of providing education in a more engaging way than a pure didactic fashion. The editors and their contributing authors have met this objective.
Audience: The audience is any healthcare provider in neonatology, ranging from nurses to resident trainees and even attending staff. We use this workbook for teaching cases during student and resident rounds. The editors and this group of mostly new authors are all credible and well-known authorities in the field.
Features: The 22 chapters deal primarily with disease entities in neonatology. Two chapters are devoted to resuscitation and mechanical ventilation. The casebook/scenario approach allows the authors to use questions and answers to keep readers involved. The illustrations are interspersed appropriately and are easy to understand. Because of the nature of this book, the discussions are somewhat simplistic, which can be problematic in areas where there is controversy.
Assessment: This is a wonderful and enjoyable resource for trainees in the field. It certainly has found frequent use in our training program. Because it is not a comprehensive book, many areas of the specialty are not covered. However, the scenarios are realistic and most of the common problems in neonatology are reviewed. The only comparable text is Neonatology: Case-Based Review, Brodsky and Doherty (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2014), which covers more topics in a more superficial way.
