The Writer's Portable Mentor by Priscilla Long

Suitable for both beginning and advanced writers of fiction and nonfiction, The Writer's Portable Mentor: A Guide to Art, Craft, and the Writing Life distills 20 years of teaching and creative thought by the well-published author Priscilla Long. The Writer's Portable Mentor helps writers understand and incorporate the regular practices of virtuoso creators; provides a guide to structuring literary, journalistic, or fictional pieces or entire books; opens the door to the sentence strategies of the masters; provides tools for developing a poet's ear for use in prose; trains writers in the observation skills of visual artists; and guides them toward more effective approaches to getting their work into the world. Says Maya Sonenberg, Director of the Creative Writing Program at University of Washington, "I have never seen anything quite like Priscilla Long's book. It presents a true alternative for the advanced writer."

I have many writing craft books on my bookshelves but Priscilla Long's "The Reader's Portable Mentor" is the most useful and unusual one I have ever used. I recommend it for beginning writers and advanced writers. Check out the review on shelf-awareness.com for another take on this book.

Priscilla Long wants all writers to strive for viruoso writing, and this book shows you how. It is like having a Writing Mentor in the room with you. For example, Chapter 5 (Writing into a Structure)alone is worth the price of the book, as so few (are there any?) writing books discuss the overall structure of a story or essay. Anyone who writes or is just thinking about writing will benefit from the wisdom contained here on Language, Sentence Craft, Observation, Metaphor, or the Art of the Paragraph. The approach is instructive, enlightening, and congenial, and it makes you want to try the exercises and write better. Highly Recommended.

To write really well is not a birthright (at least for most of us). But, how to develop into a really great writer is a question that can be answered with three words: commitment, practice, and honesty. In Priscilla Long's book, writers are taking through a series of steps that help develop and strengthen the writing muscles whether working on story structure, sentences, paragraphs, rewrites, or the development of vocabulary for a specific piece. The suggestions, advice, and exercises in her book are meant to be repeated over and over and over and over again. They are as fresh the twentieth time as they are the first, because the writer is working on his/her own material. In Long's world there really is no such thing as "writer's block". There's just writing to be done. This small volume offers a systematic approach to the art of writing and will challenge even the best writers.

This is a writer's book a writer must carry as part of her arsenal. There are so many jewels in the form of exercises--you will never be without new ways of creating sentences or paragraphs that shine with brilliance. I refer back to this book always.

Priscilla Long's writing is exquisite and I've heard that her work as a teacher and mentor is nothing short of transformative. I don't live in Washington State so I don't think I will have an opportunity to take a course with her soon, but I can take this book home with me. I've read it once and know that it will be a solid source of inspiration and guidance again and again. I'm keeping this in close reach!

Long gives the writer support, structure, inspiration, assignments and company. The most useful of all the writing books. This is the if-you-only-buy-one book. It makes an excellent gift for the writer in your life.

Priscilla Long’s “The Writer’s Portable Mentor: A Guide to Art, Craft, and the Writing Life” is not only a testament to good teaching but to her love of teaching on the page; and so she has produced a warm and loving book for her students – those she sees upfront and those around the globe. Long actually does the exercises she assigns and offers with them a collage of advice central to your personal writing life, not hers. This is one of the few craft books on my shelf that I trust to put me on the right track when I feel my writing has gone astray.

Priscilla Long's work here is the best reference available for writers who want concrete exercises to improve their craft. Using master writers, and examples from their work, Long shows you how to make your work publication worthy. These exercises gave me my voice, and brought my work to its readers - with practice they will for you too. I recommend this book in my memoir writing classes, and use it constantly in the editing and planning of my work. Don't delay. Give yourself a portable mentor.

A friend recommended recommended this book highly, and I checked it out. The proof is in the pudding for any guide purporting to help us, though, and I took the plunge to try a few of the many exercises Long provides. I unearthed an old unpublished short story of mine and tested some of the tips offered in "How to Open," about the critical importance of the first-read part of a story. I can report that the exercises worked beautifully. Long's sly warning that in her book I wouldn't find "a rant against the punctuation errors proliferating like rats in the attic as we speak," nonetheless did alert me to pay special attention to that issue in my long-neglected story. As Long wisely counsels, "Do not accept advice if it doesn't feel right." Her advice here--smart, sensible and supportive--felt very right to me, and not too long after I made my changes, it found a spot in a literary journal. What more can I say? Check it out too.

I did every single exercise in the book, taking notes about how to apply what I learned to my teaching, and murmuring with joy at all the new twists I found on ideas and techniques that I've tried in many ways to share with my students. Though I do not agree with everything Priscilla Long says, I must assert (and I do not say this lightly): this is the best writing craft book I have ever read. Thank you, thank you, for sharing this life-work, Priscilla Long.

Truly enjoyed this book. Highly recommended. This is a handbook for writers, or people who hope to write, and it provides very helpful information along that vein. This is something to keep nearby at all times.

Priscilla Long deserves high marks for this wonderful guide through the writing process.  I read the first section on "working with language" and the advice there was not only sound, but it literally opened my eyes to see how I could improve my diction and sentence structure. This book is like a multiple course meal, each chapter is to be savored, studied, and enjoyed.
