With a little adaptation, yoga can be mentally and physically therapeutic for people who have multiple sclerosis (MS). That is the main idea behind 'Yoga and Multiple Sclerosis: A Journey to Health and Healing' by Dr. Loren Fishman and Eric Small. The authors propose that the primary benefits of yoga for people with MS include reducing functional deficits, increasing self-reliance and steadying the mind. Rather than getting lost in jargon, Fishman and Small disseminate their knowledge in a lucid manner that readers who have never tried yoga will appreciate. The many photographs sprinkled throughout the pages are helpful visual cues for readers when they attempt the different poses. Its credibility is boosted considerably by the fact that the two authors have decades of experience with using yoga as a way to manage symptoms of MS. Small began participating in yoga after being diagnosed with MS when he was 22, and he has been teaching yoga since the mid-1960s. Fishman has incorporated yoga into his work with rehabilitation for more than 25 years. With this book, people with MS stand to gain a progressive education on safely and effectively practicing yoga.
I got this book nine years after my MS diagnosis and I wish I had found it years earlier! I was a total yoga beginner and this book adresses that as well as the issues of MS and other neurological disorders. You learn the basic poses using the standard forms as well as alternatives depending on your needs. I would recommend this book along with the dvd (ordering info in back of book). I would like to have seen at least one complete routine on the dvd though. They just show how to do individual poses which is helpful but falls short of being something you can put in the player and follow along.
