Learning about opposites has never been more fun - or funny - than with this winning book. Yummy!

Spaghetti is yummy, but worms - and blue crayons, and sand, and other things too gross to mention - are definitely yucky when tasted. Amiably illustrated in a bright, graphic style, Leslie Patricelli’s spirited book, Yummy Yucky stars an obliging, bald, and very expressive toddler who acts out each pair of opposites with comically dramatic effect.

About the Author

Leslie Patricelli is the creator of a series of best-selling board books starring her beloved (almost) bald baby as well as Higher! Higher!; Faster! Faster!; Be Quiet, Mike!; and two stories about the Patterson Puppies. She lives in Ketchum, Idaho.

“My Grandma was a pastel artist and, for as long as I can remember, an artist is what I wanted to be too,” says children’s author and illustrator Leslie Patricelli. “My hobby as a kid was drawing cartoons and writing stories, and I started to consider a career in art in seventh grade. When the multiple choice career test I took resulted in a recommendation that I pursue a career in forestry, I went back and changed all my answers, so that it recommended instead that I pursue graphic design since they didn’t have children’s book writer or cartoonist on the list.”

Today, Leslie Patricelli’s legions of fans are evidence that career tests are not always reliable. Her colorful board books about opposites —Yummy Yucky, Big Little, Quiet Loud, and No No Yes Yes —follow a diapered protagonist as he discovers some curious contradictions, such as “ladies are big” while “ladybugs are little.” Her inspiration for the series came from her son Beck who, at one year old, “was constantly putting everything into his mouth.” Says the author, “I found myself saying ‘Yummy!’ and ‘Yucky!’ all the time. I began to draw a baby dramatically expressing his taste or distaste for the things he was eating. The idea of Yummy Yucky was born!”

Leslie Patricelli’s baby board books also include Potty, Tubby, Tickle, Toot, Binky, and Blankie, which play up scenarios near and dear to every toddler’s heart with the artist’s humorous, bold graphic style. Here again, the author-illustrator drew on her parenting experiences. “During our years of early child-rearing, my husband and I have spent countless frantic hours looking for Binky. Usually the search is tense, as it typically begins when our toddler wants her binky NOW! I found myself thinking how funny it must look to our kids to see us on our hands and knees, digging around the house. As for Blankie, this book was created as an ode to that beloved item.”

Baby also stars in a series of holiday board books: Boo! (Halloween); Fa La La (Christmas); and Huggy Kissy (Valentine’s Day); and Hop! Hop! (Easter).

Leslie Patricelli is also the author-illustrator of several other picture books, including
Higher! Higher!, a Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards Honor Book, and the Patterson Puppies series.

She lives in Idaho with her husband, Jason, her two daughters, Tia and Tatum, Leslie’s son, Beck (who is studying jazz in New York City, but still has a bedroom), a dog named Shep, three cats named Oreo, Kiki and Red Devil, and a leopard gecko named Bananaz.

Fantastic! An adorable read not only for my preschooler, but my toddler. It's even great for infants (which is the stage my preschooler was in when we purchased this book). Cute, funny, and easy for a child to read along to.

My daughter recognizes the everyday things items in this book and points and laughs at every page. Only after a couple of readings, she knew what yucky meant and now takes it very seriously.

Older kids may loose interest, but the 1-2 year olds in my daycare class love this book.

My daughter and I just love Leslie Patricelli's books. This one is just as cute as the others, and funny as well. My daughter loves the baby's different expressions and saying what is yummy or yucky on each page.

My son loves the cute little boy character in these books. He loves to point out all the yummy and yucky things and we laugh alot while reading it. The book is so colorful and he loves it over and over again. He repeats the words and I believe it has increased his toddler vocabulary.

I love reading this book to my 1 yr old granddaughter. Simple illustrations that help with the "lesson". Teaches when it is OK to eat something and when it isn't. Mommy's chocolate chip cookies--Yummy ! Mommy's coffee--Yucky! Fun and educational for wee little ones.

My 3 year old is speech delayed. His speech therapist suggested that we focus on books that don't have the things he knows and is comfortable with (numbers, letters, colors). I bought this book and BIG Little and QUIET Loud for that reason. HE LOVES THEM. He now reads them to me. It gave him something to take to daycare for Show & Tell that he could actually demonstrate for the class. He read it to them. I love the ideas, the words and the pictures in these books. He now insists on reading all three to me before bed every night. THE BEST.

This book shows opposites in regards to what is yummy and what is yucky, but does so with a lot of humor. This book can be enjoyed by both parents and children and you may not even mind reading over and over and over again.

This book is really cute. My 18 month old son is constantly bringing this over for me to read. His older sisters enjoy reading it to him too because they think it's so funny.

This is the perfect book to read to toddlers who love to try out everything. The illustrations are colorful, clear and uncluttered so your toddler can view the heart of each page's message. The contrast between what is "Yummy" or "Yucky" is humorous. I have the eBook version of this book on my Nook HD and my 18 month old granddaughter loves it. It has the option for you to record the book as you read it.

I got this book for my 2 1/2 year old son. When I purchased the book, I didn't realize it was only read to self. After reading it with my son only a few times, he has been able to go through the entire book and read it himself. It is simple, which is wonderful for beginner readers.

I guess for very young children (under one) this book would be okay, but with older children it is a case of common sense.

This book is best for children aged 1-3. I don't drink coffee so we had to change the words to Daddy's coffee is yucky. Over all nice book, children will like the rhythmic read.

Leslie Patricelli is the only author that my 17 year old daughter, 3 year old son, and 21 year old brother all enjoy reading.

Some things are yummy, some things are yucky. This book lets kids explore the difference and has examples of both.

A good simple book for toddlers, with enough quirk to be amusing for adults. My daughter loved it from about a year old. It did take me a while to recognize that she was quoting from it when she pointed to my drink and said "Yucky!"
