Overview

Adam Weldon thinks that only a few short weeks of hard work stand between him and a very bright future. Soon, however, he is caught up in forces beyond his control—forces unleashed by the Civil War. Both his love for his fiance, Laura, and his new faith will be tried in ways he can’t imagine. Little does he suspect that Laura has a persistent, new suitor capable of sowing doubts.

Outlaws, Indian trouble, and the possibility of hostilities between the Mormons and U.S. government provide the backdrop for stories that intertwine with Adam’s. Cyrus Wills, a sergeant in the U.S. infantry, has come to the territory curious about the faith his mother embraced before her death. Susan Haws, a newcomer to Grantsville, is enjoying the fellowship of her Latter-day Saint neighbors while trying to break free from her former life—and a sinister bargain.

Adventure awaits in this suspense-filled book from master-storyteller Chris Jefferies.

About the Author

Dr. Jefferies is a direct descendant of twelve ancestors who traveled the Mormon trail from 1847 through 1862. A self-described "rut-nut,” he has spent years tracing the "westering” emigration trails and studying contemporary accounts of those who traveled over them. Foremost is the emigration journal kept by his great-great grandfather.

The author is an accomplished writer who has published in professional journals over the past thirty years. His meticulous research and engaging writing style are clearly evident in his novel. A retired Air Force colonel, he is a career administrator and educator. He holds an undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University, a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and a doctorate from the University of Oklahoma.
