Erotic Pride and Prejudice

While impressed with her work, Egerton told Austen that he would not publish it because it would be seen by the general public as obscene, and he could not afford the scandal. Desperate for money, Austen pleaded with the publisher to reconsider. Egerton said that he would only do so if significant alterations were made. Austen immediately agreed, and in January of the following year Pride and Prejudice was published for the first time.
